Subject: '99 V6 fuel filter issue?? IP: Logged
Message: Okay, got a strange one here. My 99 Dakota has 172,000 miles on it (yea, I drive a lot). The engine runs and idles very smooth when the truck is in PARK. When it is in any gear, the engine idles very rough. If I accelerate during rough periods, the truck does not respond immediately. It is sluggish. When it does respond, it accelerates very jerky, like something iin the engine is "missing" or it's not getting fuel. It also kicks into overdrive far to much going up hills (loses momentum) or after I make a turn and hit the gas again. Is this a fuel filter or fuel injector trouble?? (store cleaners do not cause any change in its performance and neither does hi-test gas). Please don't tell me it's the transmission!!

Message: Well...first, your truck doesn't have a true fuel filter, it's more like the panty hose on your grandma's clothes dryer. Do a search for "fuel filter". Its part of your pump, which could be bad...
Otherwise I'd clean your throttle body and IAC(very carefully) and if that doesn't help, you should definately consult a trained technician.

Message: To clean your TB just go to any parts store and get throttle body/card cleaner. (make sure it says throttle body). With the truck running spray the TB cleaner in the throttle body (you will have to remove the Air hat from the TB).
For info on cleaning your IAC, vistit my website, under the Tips and Tricks it is the 4th item down on the left column.
I hope this helps alot.

Message: another product you could try is Seafoam...suck 1/3 of the product in with manifold vacuum(via brake booster vacuum hose) and add the rest to the tank. BG's fuel system cleaner rumours to work well also, but its pricey.

Message: Thanks for the tips. I noticed on the way in to work tonight that the rough idling effect is magnified by having the air conditioner running.
