Subject: New gears?

Question for anyone who wants to answer. I keep hearing about how putting a 'better gear ratio' will help me out as far as being faster off the line and such. My question is this....can the gears be changed out, and how much does it cost?

yes, the gears can be change. yes they can cost a lot. The local speed shop where I live (speedtek) sells motive gear for $199 and will install for $200. now if you have a 98 and later you will need to get your computer adjusted for the speed'o.

hope this helps

Ok, follow up question...any suggestions? (As to what gear ratio) Shoulda thought to ask these before....sorry. Just go for the 3.92 (which is, what I believe, Dodge offers as an option) or are there others to be considered? Thanks for the help.

fourginv1,
dodge offered the 3.92 gears in the 9.25" rear end. if you have the 8.25" rear end the closest thing you can get to that ratio is 3.90. Don't know what rear you have? count the bolts on the back;
10 bolts 8.25"
12 bolts 9.25"

I, myself, am going to put in 4.10 gears. that will kill some high way cruising but I don't care.
if you would like to see what kinda rpm change it will produce than go to www.ring-pinion.com ...
they will show you what rpm you'll be doing at what speed and with what size tire diameter.
don't know your tire diameter? it can show you that too.

the 3.92 is and was available for the 8.25 also. I don't believe the computer has to be programmed for a gear ratio change on the later trucks, I think it was pre-98 that required that.

nysubdak,
YOU WILL HAVE TO ADJUST THE COMPUTER!!!!!!
if you throw those 4.10 gears in there and the computer is programmed to think "3.55" than there will be a problem. i have seen it happen....when your going like 55, the speedo will show like 90 or something and when the speedo tops out at 110 the governor will kick in...even though your only going like 70...really sucks...now i think speedtweaks sells something you can wire in that you can change the signal to the computer from the speed sensor in the rearend.

motive gear and richmond carry the 4.10 gears.

'98 and up read wheel speed (gear ratio have no affect on that), '97 and older read driveshaft speed (affected by gear ratio)

Will going from a 355 to 390 help me in towing a trailer. I have a 2001 Ram. I tow a 5000 lb trailer. This truck is rated to pull 7500 lbs. Shifting from 1st gear to 2nd is not a problem, but as soon as it shifts into 3rd, it has nothing there. Thanks for any information.

Can anyone help me?

changing the rear end gear is not all that hard of a job to do yourself with some help.

or it is not on a 82 stang and an 85 stang i know i know they are fords. lol

if all rear ends are anything alike as long as you take you time and watch everything there should be no reason a person with mechanical skill should not be able to change a rear end gear.

and i mean has some skills not someone that thinks they know and can do everything
