Subject: female seeks advice
IP: Logged

Message:
anyone who responds to this, please know that i am a 19 year old female who only knows a little about vehicles. i can change things if i know what i am looking for. i bought a 1994 Dakota 4x4 with a V6 a little while back. i just had a new cat, muffler and tail pipe installed. now it seems louder than before, with less power. (I had it at 105mph before, now 85-90 is tops). did they do something wrong? can i fix it? also, i was told i am leaking oil from my transfer case. how hard is this to fix, or should i get a new one. lastly, i have a problem stalling sometimes. i noticed on other posts that this might be a crank sensor. where exactly is it? is it something i can do, or do i need a professional? any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Whats the matter all you Dak guys are you afraid
to help this young lady.

I don't know how much you can do but here is a
starting point.

turn your key on and off 3 times than turn it on
and leave it on.

on off, on off, on off, now on and leave it on
and check for any trouble codes.

Now watch the check engine light, it is binary
so first it will flash once pause than twice.
that is 12 the start of the diagnostics check.

see if you get any codes and write them down.
55 is end of tests and you will get that when
its done checking.

The stalling sounds like it may be the IAC
Idle Air Control its a small electrical valve
on the back of the throttle body.

You can see if it is working by removing the air
cleaner and look down the hole in the back of
the throttle body before you start it, it should
be back off the seat. Have someone start the
vehicle while you watch the valve with a light
shinning on it. should move towards the seat.
when you rev the engine some you should see it
move back off the seat and than return.

It may just need to be removed and cleaned gently
do not twist push or pull on it. with carb cleaner
or replace it. you need a #25 torxes to remove it
to clean it.

The transfer case leak could just be the seal
where the driveshaft plugs into it you need
to wipe it off and see exactly where it is
leaking.

Hope that helps

To elaborate on what DODGE DRAGON said.If they used a 3inch dia. inlet/outlet on the muffler instead of the stock size .If you've got the receipt/workorder there ,tell us what the new added parts are (make and part number would suffice)

As soon as she gets back to us with any trouble
codes we would have a better idea.

A bad O2 could also cause the top end prob not
running the correct air fuel ratio. Reading
wrong now with the new exhaust system.

I have seen that isue before on these trucks
replaced the O2 and it was fine.

she would have gained top end, but remember, daks dont rev all that high to get a true "top end", most of them cant turn more than about 5300 rpm, correct? Mine only turns 4600, and its a premagnum, not sure of the magnums, but they dont rev high enough to make it useful

Code 33 A/C cutout relay circuit.

Does your A/C work ok on this truck. It may need
the presure sensor replaced not cycling the A/C
unit corectly.

Yes it is normal for the oil light to stay on
while doing this test, that's ok

I would put a couple hundred miles on it and than
see how your top end is, it may just be relearning
your new exhaust system.

Does it stall at red lights or while your driving..if it stalls everytime you stop i would check the transmission control sensor on the transmission where the speedometer cable attaches..mine went bad and everytime i stopped a little quick it would die...been a major pain in my a ss for awhile..gone through 3 of these so far..also check your idle air control sensor on the throttle body..a Haynes repair book will show you how to replace it plus have all the codes for your truck..mine has been INVALUABLE!!..If you pull off the iac don't push the plunger in when checking it..it will mess ur idle up big time..if it has carbon on it its time to get the newer version of it if it was the original with metal tip..or keep cleaning the tip with a carb/throttle body cleaner..later

Check the IAC Idle Air Controll as I told you in
one of the posts above.

Does it stall while driving or just when you try
to idle or slow down

so i need a new iac for my stalling problem, and a new o2 sensor for my muffler problem.
the truck just stalls. there is no common situation. sometimes when stopped. sometimes when driving downhill, it varies.
i had a local place check the codes, he said that none showed up. not even a 33. if i need a new iac & o2 sensors, wouldn't a code show up for these?
what did you guys mean by "top-end gain"

Hello ACRucrazy, I know you from the neons.org site.

Well, you may have put to0 big-of piping on there for the car to run at peak performance. If so, you can either take it off, or put new parts on to sustain the added pipe size. Just do what these guys tell you, and everything will be good.

Top-end gains is the feel when you pull from like 60 mph. It is how fast the car feels when you floor it when you are going.

Oh, an intake and ecu would probably correct the backpressure issue (do you need a tissue for your issue?).

Later,
Stephen

the muffler being louder is probably because they used a larger pipe or they never clamped it down tight enough...i've noticed that some shops don't tighten the clamps enough..maybe they put on a turbo muffler and a high flow converter because they said it will give you better performance?...the leaking transfer case might be just a gasket or 1 of the bolts is loose and is dripping through there..or like larry said a seal..
ps..did u ever replace the pcv valve yet..could be gummed up also...if that is plugged the truck will stall..if you don't think so put your finger over the end..the suction should be really strong..as soon as its pluggged the truck will stall

The codes will not always show the problem.

Yes check the PCV it is on the pasinger side valve
cover it has a hose on it and plugs into the cover
Pull it out while its running and put your finger
over it it should suck your finger to the valve.
if not replace it.

It sounds like your IAC is bad everytime you let
off the gas the IAC should react to maintain the
idle and it sounds like its not. Stalling

You can get a new IAC at autozone for $40 $50
and a #25 torxs driver to remove and replace.

Check both these things and let us know.

I would not be in a rush with the O2 yet.

i hear ya..the O2 can probably wait...but definetly check those 2 things out...after you check to see if the IAC is carboned up remember DO NOT TO PUSH THE PLUNGER IN!!! can't stress how important that really is..spray it with a good throttle carb cleaner and spray the throttle body while u r at it...you'll notice carbon on the underside of the butterflies if you take a look..if u happen to have a metal tip on the end of that IAC go get a new one from DODGE dealer..they improved them since that year..good luck

try pulling out the IAC sensor, mine was in the back of my throttle body on my 97' dak

pull it out and clean it with throttle body cleaner and a rag

if that doesn't fix it, it may be a bad sensor
I had to buy one from dodge @ $67

From what she says it is her IAC.

It is located on the back of the Throttle Body
under the air cleaner, replace it and your prob
will be solved.

Between the cab and TB on the back you should be
able to replace it yourself.

Maybe the guys at autozone will even put it on
for you its just 2 #25 torxs screws and unplug
the wire.
