Subject: FLEX FAN VS. ELECTRIC FAN? IP: Logged
Message: my 93 3.9 2WD has a clutch type fan...i want to replace with a 2500-3000 cfm electric fan...question??would a flex fan work better than electric?I got a great deal on a 3 row radiator i have so i was wondering if those fans can handle it...i run with the stock thermostat right now and the temps get only 1/4 inch past the first mark in my gauge...any clues?

Message: Any fan that is belt driven will almost always rob more power from your engine than an elec one.
Rad has nothing to do with the fan you use, get a 2100 cfm or higher elec and a 180 T stat and you'll be ok.
Also......if you want an extra edge put your fan on a master switch in the cab and when you get ready to race you can turn it off for those few seconds and get that much less drag from your alt.
Dont forget, you MUST put your elec fan on a relay, dont try to get around it, it will only cost you more later.

Message: the question with the radiator part was that since its a 4 row..not 3 row..my fault...it doesn't need alot of air to keep it cool since its 2x's as thick as my stock radiator was..it spreads the heat out more so it cools faster..does anyone know what temp it is when it reaches the first line after Cold?Im a little above that..thx

Message: You cannot use the "lines" on a stock gauge to determine anything except a very good guess if your in a safe operating temp.
I have had 3 Daks now and all of em had different operating temps according to the stock gauge and when I put in an old school SW temp gauge on they all were 190-205. The varying ranges I had on the stock gauge would have suggested I had a wider margine than that but I learned along time ago not to trust and factory temp or oil pressure gauges.

Message: The Black Magic 150 is what most people use, its
2,800 cfm and comes with the thermo switch for
around $200.
I am running a 2,400 that I got off a 1990 Olds
Cutlas that ended up in my yard, with a Flexolite
thermo switch set at 180 185 when it hits 185 its
on.
FazDak is right don't put to much faith in any
factory guage they are not that acurate.
I have run this set up in 90 degree weather with
no probs and yes it robs less horse power than
a belt driven fan.
80 and below it never comes on even sitting and
idleing.
It fit just perfict in my radiator shroud and
draws 16 amp just like the BM 150 that I have
installed on a few Daks
I hooked it up with the relay out of the same car
with a manual on switch should anything fail and
a master disconect so it don't run when I shut
the truck off. The first thing I do in warm
weather is turn the master switch on than start
my truck and the last thing I do is shut it off
after my ride o it will run for 5 10 minits and
it don't need to.
Defenitly the way to go.

Message: My electric fans in my 75 Corvette and 97 ACR Neon i have hooked up to a aux out on my alarm...and a toggle switch..so i can turn the fans off and on with the switch...or the alarm remote....I will do that to my Dakota too when i get around to putting an electric fan it..
My stock fan SUX...stays engaged WAY TO LONG...up to 30 ususally..loud, robs power...and its on a 2000 3.9 auto with less than 30k miles.

Message: They are easy to install just be sure you put
it in the right direction, you want the fan to
pull outside air through the Rad not pull hot
air off the motor and blow it out over the Rad.
You need a relay that is activated with a thermo
switch. just compleats the ground and turns on
the relay and a 30 amp fuse in the system.
Flexolite comes with good instructions on how to
wire the fan but I would add a master disconect
on the ground side between the relay ground and
the thermo switch so it does not run when the
truck is shut off.
I also added a manual switch on the ground side
of the relay just incase the thermo switch was
to ever fail I could turn it on manualy.
I have a 3 switch block in the cab 2 togles and
a rocker switch.
1 master fan disconect
2 manual switch on
3 to switch between my 2 IAT sensors

Message: No,
I have it set up that way because when it rains I
put plugs in the scoop than I draw inside air.
I actualy taped a radio shack thermo sensor to
the bootom of the air cleaner to test it.
at idle standing still it read 130
at 40mph it droped to 100 110
over 60 it drops it to outside temp.
I have also removed the plastic piece from in
front of where the old intake tube came in by
the grill so when I do have the plugs in I still
get cold air just not as much.
Its very noticable at 60 and above on the highway.

Message: It actually cools the hole engine compartment with
the air the scoop blows in.
You can just get the Exstram top for the filter you
have don't spend the money on a hole new setup
you don't need.
Mine was the K&N FIPK than I just bought the
Exstream 14" top for it. Yes it will help
straighten the air flow and draw better

Message: thats what i was wonderng about the rain too..thx...i took that plastic off the front opening and cut the hole so it was wider and taller..i should get more air in the compartment now..the topper around here sells for around $40 so i will probably keep the 14in base..but y shouldn't i go with K&N round filter so it all matches?...by the way..where did u get the chrome valve covers?been looking for those for awhile..also..is that an MSD ignition box too?how much of an increase in the MPG did u get with it?

Message: I thought you had a 14 X 3 rouund K&N filter.
What you see is all K&N
The covers are painted with plasticote chrome
paint 3 coats. Yes they look just like chrome
but took a week to dry.
No one can tell the differance even up close
people think I had them chromed. Turned out
very nice for around $6 for the paint and what
you see there has 10,000 miles on them and still
nice. Holds up very well, it was that or $200 to
get them chromed. No covers availible for 3.9Mag
The MSD and MSD SS Blaster coil as far as gas
milage I don't know but it gave it some low end
response and a smother idle, it could just be my
foot steping on it to much. Yes it helps, I also
used the MSD 8.5 super conductor wires.

Message: Not nesasary,
It will flow very well no deflector of fan needed.
If you have the rubber flap around the Rad remove
it and you will get more cold air under the hood.
Depending on the year of your truck.
Just adding the 14X3 befor the scoop or the
Exstram top helped a lot.

Message: Speaking of Fans... I have Viper fans in stock-- 2 speed fan, (Viper as in for the Viper)--- $160 shipped.
You'll need to fab things to get it in there (many are doing it)-- flows 2800 cfm+ on high I am told.
I am convertering my own 00 RT to this setup-- The Gen II's it fits much easier-- Will require wiring, relays, and a on/off switch and or temp controller.
