Message:
On my 99 Dakota 6cyl the gear shift indicator is reading the wrong gear. The transmission shifts fine and goes into each gear, but the indicator is 2 gears wrong. It just happend yesterday. I have heard that there is an adjustment that can be made under the dash for it. Any advice or help finding it is apprciated.

If you remove the knee bolster (the panel right under the steering wheel) you can look back and see a white thumb screw adjuster. Turn that to adjust the gear selector indicator. After you adjust the thumb screw adjuster take a look at your gear indicator. Keep adjusting until you are happy with the results. I will also suggest that you check the position of EVERY gear position before buttoning the interior back up. Total time involved will be about 5 to 10 minutes. Good luck.
