I have 160K on my drum brakes and they have never been replaced. How's everyone else on brakes? I just replaced the disc's for the second time about 1K miles ago. I'm I just lucky or is this normal?

Generally, no, yuo should have replaced the rear brakes long ago. I check mine every 20,000 miles. While it's true that the front brakes take more load because of weight transfer, rear brakes still wear out. I'd check them right away.

A good rule of thumb is 2 front brake jobs per every 1 rear brake job (assuming drum brakes on rear), otherwise you may need to consider keeping your drum brakes in better adjustment.

i replaced my pads and rotated the discs and they checked my drums and both needed work. i forgot what he said exactly but something like that the cylinder was blown in the drums. that was when my truck had 42,000 miles and i dont know if the owner before me replaced them or not.

I have a 99 Dakota with 139,000 plus miles on it. I have had the truck since it had 3 miles on it. Since then i've replaced the front pads once and the rear pads still have about 20-25% left on them.

I have a 92 and changed the drums and both wheel cylinders at 135k. I dont think any work was done previously. On the discs I have changed them and had the rotors turned but are still kinda shaky, firestone says they shouldnt have been turned because they are too thin. Firestone also wanted $700 for the rear drums, wheel cylinders, and new rotors up front. Auto Zone-$20shoes, $10per wheelcylinder, and 5 bucks for springs, what $50 bucks and have yet to buy the rotors for $60pair. I just kept driving on the stock drums until I lost pressure from wheel cylinders leaking.

My '93's rear cylinder(s) also blew at about 93-94K miles. (about the time I bought the truck this past fall).

I have 85,000 miles and no change. I had Midas look at them recently and they said they looked fine. And for greedy Midas not to say they don't need work, I was surprised.
Wouldn't want any other!

I own a 2001 Dakota QuadCab 4x4 with 40K on the clock and have towed a 26' Airstream (w/elect. brakes) three times.
The front rotors were turned at 34K and now they need it again! Is anyone else out there experiencing abnormal front brake wear?
I am replacing the rotors with Brembo and new Hawk pads.

he stock pad compound is extremely hard and chews up rotors. I replaced mine at 24k miles due to warpage. Use good rotors and a soft pad compound and the rotors should last longer.
I used Wagner Premium rotors and their cheaper pad compound. Fine after 8k miles.

What kind of driving does everybody do?
I drive a ton of back roads where animals jump out and I have to hit the brakes, that's a nighly occurance.
if you drive highway miles you will be able to put more miles with the same set of brakes.
My truck got about 30,000 on the front brakes, only about 35,000 on the rear drums now.

Since this was my original post let me tell you a little about my truck. I have 160K(Original owner) and have not replaced the drum brakes or had them turned. I just replaced the front disc's about 2000 miles ago for the second time. The rotors have never been replaced just turned. I tow a 18foot boat that weighs over 3500 lbs. I also tow other smaller trailers and do mountain driving.

i have an 06 dakota-trx off road!! ive always have had problems with dodge brakes from minivans,neons,pickup trucks! SRT NEONS NEVER NO PROBLEMS!i need and want to get those rear drums off and convert them into discs! IS THERE A COMPLETE CHANGER-OVER KIT? I DONT WANT THE ROTOR SLIDE OVER REAR DRUM KIND!! IF THERE ISNT ANY...ILL NEED TO BUY A REAR END HOUSING FROM AN 04-05..THX..I HATE SHIMMING TRUCKS WHEN I APPLY BRAKES..
