Ok, I have an 02 SXT 4x4 auto. It's bone stock with the 3.92 gears. My brother in law bought a 02 ranger, it's a 5 speed 4x4 with the 4.0 motor. Bastard bought it right after me just to steal my thunder. Anyways, his truck has always been way faster then mine. I know he has more power and less weight, and also the manual helps him beat me. I really need to show him what's up. Him and his dad (my father inlaw) are total ford guys, and they have been raggin on my truck since day one. Dad has an older ranger with the 4.0. My only hope is that from that factory the dodges are just way more restricted. He already has done a few things to his, such as k&n intake, and a new exhaust. He's not real mechanically inclined so i don't think he'll do much else too it. Do i have any hope in beating him ever? I already know that i need an intake, and bigger TB, exhaust, tstat.......all those things. I just want to know if i have any hope. I was so close to buying a used ranger, and when i was on my way to give them the down payment the SXT rolled off the truck. For a few grand more i was able to get a real truck rather then the toy. My only consolation so far is that I can F**k his sister (and daughter) in the extended cab of my truck, and they can barely fit fido back there haha.

Besides, the Dakota is NOT a generic truck like the Rangers and S-10's.

whoa....hold on...
A buddy of mine at work bought an 02 Ranger FX4 4x4 Auto and when we head home after work my 02 SXT 4x4 takes him all the time, and I was actually shocked because I thought his would run faster since it is smaller and has a little more HP, though the torque numbers are low for the amount of HP it puts out. Anyway, it is hard to believe the Ranger is taking you. Most of the 6ers are all gonna run close in the end, the Ranger the S-10 the Tacoma etc etc. The thing is, you do have a REAL truck, that is the same reason I bought mine. I love it! It pulls my trailers, hauls what I want, and I enjoy offroading with it on occasion. Overall, you got a BETTER truck PERIOD.

maybe it's becuase your buddies is an auto. but I get spanked constantly. Anyone ever driven one of the 4.0 rangers? They are pretty impressive. Don't get me wrong, i like my truck. I just want it to beat his. I would have got the ranger just because of the power, but i decided random sh*t falling off like door panels and such just wasn't worth it. Maybe it's because yours has a few mods already. but like i said he was spaknking me even when his was stock. I'm thinkig that the rangers come from the factory with just a lot less restrictions on it. Hopefully when i open mine up and let it breathe it'll make more of a difference then his did.

HP is only part of it In My opinion ford transmissions are far better and geared differently I still think my 2000 ranger Extcab 3.0 would blow my 02 3.9 Quadcab away.

I drove the 4.0 Ranger FX4 as well as an S-10, V6 Tacoma and a Nissan Frontier. I was not impressed by any of them. Out of that group the S-10 would have been my second choice to the Dakota. I bought the SXT because it had everything I wanted besides a V8 and power windows locks. I ended up walking off the lot with the 2002 Dakota SXT CC 4x4 Auto, 3.92s, tonneau, rear sliding window, tow group for $17,800 in Pennsylvania. The V8 Sport Plus with the similar options came to about 28k, then I dealt them down to about $24,500 so the SXT was the buy for me. I love the truck and am having a blast with it.

yeah, I love my truck too. I'm glad i bought what i did too. I've raced at beat several tacoma's, a couple s 10 and some of the older nissans. The 4.0 ranger is F**KING fast. There is no denying that. I can haul more stuff then him, fit 4 more comfortably then him, but he'll for ever have the upper hand until i am faster then him. Will the auto 3.9 ever take a manual 4.0???? I know i'm going to have to mod it up, but it isn't worth it to me to spend ALOT of money.

Like I said, all of the 6-ers are rather close, it is all in who has better mods. The manual is a big help no matter what anyone says. I bought mine with the Auto because I do not race the truck, I use it for towing, every day driving, and off-roading with my cousins and friends. I have a Roadrunner I use when I want to kick some but on the street. 1971 built 440-6 4spd.
Mods that will help you....
Intake (I have Intense Performance Stage II) -$150
Less Restrictive Muffler - $65
Throttle Body (I suggest the F&B 48mm) - $400
180 T-Stat - $5
Autolite Plugs(3923s) - $10
So for around $600-$700 you will be much more satisfied. Just do some researching before buying your mods...pick what you feel is best. I can tell you I am very happy with mine so far...

I want to next get the F&B TB, MSD ignition, then look into a chip. But the above mods woke mine up quite a bit.

if you have a quad cab and 4 wheel drive with a 3.9 engine its not all made for speed anyways i have a 98 standard with 3.92 gears with flowmaster exhaust a new throttle body,performance chip, k&n air filter, and i smoke the ford rangers and the s-10 extremes

Here's the only mod you need. Get a chain and hook em up.. Who's got who now??? Damn straight who. I bet that you can pull him in 2wd, but I guess it all depends on your tires.

might want to think that last one through first - chaining a stick to an automatic usually doesnt work well for the stick.

2002 a 4x4 cab plus and auto
i got a 98 reg cab
I got a couple mods and so does he and i take
him all the time.
I think there is a big horsepower differnce in the years in the new rangers.
might want to check that out

Find a differnce in powerbands where he is weaker then race to your ad. But dont expect to beat him easily or w/o many mods. Unless of course you'll consider chaining them together.

the other day i wuz coming out of rocky mountain house and had a 02 ford ranger 4.0 following me he pulled out and passed me and sped up in front i thought i would have a little fun thow. i put my foot in it and my 98 3.9 ext cab short box kicked down and fuked of past the ranger he followed until i hit 140 and his truck stayed back i took it up into the 200 mark and let off knowing the road for pigs

I had a ranger reg cab 4.0 5-speed. It was quick. It beat beat my buddy's 4.7 auto quad cab dakota by 4 car lengths. It was faster than the truck I have now, a 3.9 reg cab 5-speed dakota. But I beat my buddy in his 4.0 auto exd.cab ranger with my dakota all the time. I like the dakota better. I cant wait to drop in the 5.9

i just got a 2003 ranger 4.0.207hp stock. ihave raced 5.4 150s,318 dakota, ihad a 5.4 2002 250sd,the 4.0 smoked them all.it is 4.0 5 speed manual with 411 gears.runs ex. sorry about your luck.

wow, i posted this awhile ago. Since then i've added a few mods, and the 3.9 really woke up. He has almost the same mods i do, but i can whoop now. well it's close but i always win.
