Subject: how much for an IAC?
IP: Logged

Message:
m truck has been idling REALLY high lately. I can actually coast down a street at 30-35 without ever touching the pedal. Then in park im between 1600 and 2000 RPM. Ive done some searching in the archives and it seems the IAC has been problematic. Now my problem...where do i buy it? Ive contacted all the local parts stores and no one has anything related to an Idle Air Controler in their computers. Any ideas?

Got one from AutoZone only about $30.00. You can clean your old one and the port it goes in with a good carb cleaner. Might save you some money and anyway you have to clean the port before you install a new one. Good luck.

cwlish...you got raped iffn you paid $100 for an IAC valve. Snickersbps, I just did an online check at Auto Zone and for the IAC it's $39.99. It's made by Wells and the part number is AC305. Advance sells one made by GP Sorenson and sells for $45.49, part number 77910070. I can't even find one on the Napa web site. I made the the mistake of accidently pushing in the plunger once when I cleaned the IAC and sure enough, it idled at about 2500 RPM. A quick trip to AZ, $40, and 35,000 miles later, it still runs great.

excelent, thanks Dakota39M. The checks i did earlier were specific for my truck and i got nothing, but that Part # search came up with it

now is it difficult not to push in the plunger? Will i actually know what your talking about when i get it off?

and how much time are we looking at? like 30 min? 1 hour?

thanks again guys

Shouldn't take but 10-20 min but it's on the back of your Throttle Body & depending on how much room you have it may need to be removed. Oh btw it takes a Torx driver (Star) to get it off. Don't remember the number, think it's an 6 or 8.

If you've never cleaned your TB before it will probably take longer than 10-20 minutes. I took my time the first time i cleaned it and made sure everything was completely cleaned, just spraying the IAC port wasn't enough to get all the carbon buildup out. I very carefully cleaned the IAC and the port with my wifes tooth brush...what?...she uses my razor... Solved alot of idle issues I was having with my '98...and the wifes breath has never smelled so garage fresh...lol!
You will need to get a TB gasket, don't reuse the old one.

Snickersbps,
You should have no problem seeing the plunger on the IAC. If you go to the Advance Auto parts web site, and do search for the IAC, it brings up a pic of the part and you can get an idea what your looking for. In that particular pic the plunger is on the left side. You can try cleaning it first, but be prepared to pull the TB back off and change the IAC if the idle does not come down. Its not hard to avoid pushing the plunger in, I was just stupid and dropped mine while cleaning it and it happened to hit the ground on the plunger. Make sure you get the port in the TB cleaned out as well. As was mentioned earlier, a toothbrush (other than your wifes, LOL) works good and pipe cleaners help too. The entire job should take less than 30 minutes to complete. One other thing, if you have to replace the IAC, when you first start your engine, you may see a higher then normal idle speed and hear a whistling sound. This is normal. The IAC has to get info from the PCM upon initial install to get to the correct idle speed. So, until the little servo motor inside the valve gets the plunger cranked down to where it should be, you'll hear air whistling sounds and have high idle. Don't hit the gas pedal, just let it learn where its supposed to be. It should take less than 3 minutes or so to complete its cycle.

I just took a look at it real quick(Im at work...not much exra time) and it looked like my IAC was on the side, not the back, but i could be wrong(has happened before ;P) Does it make a difference from year to year? mines a 91, and im reading about your guys' Gen 3's. I would assume theyre atleast similar.

Snickersbps,
It makes a huge difference what year the truck is. I'm not 100% positive but I believe the 91's still had throttle body fuel injection. The Gen III's have multi port fuel injection. That said, the MPI throttle body does nothing more then regulate air going to the engine and the system uses individual injectors to deliver the atomized fuel to each cylinder. The TBI unit regulates the air flow and introduces vaporized fuel into the intake manifold. After doing a little research, I believe your truck does not have an IAC but instead has whats called an automatic idle speed motor. A quick search on the Auto Zone web site revealed nothing available with that part name. You may end up seeing a dealer for it. I can offer you one thing that may help you work on your truck. If you don't have a field service manual, Haynes or Chiltons, you can go to this web site:

http://www.cybrrpartspro.com/Manual%20Lookup/cal_ModelLookup.html

Plug in your trucks year and model and your can find step by step instructions for just about any work you want to do. They aren't all inclusive for all vehicles, my 98 Dak isn't available online yet, but I checked and your 91 is. Good luck with your project and let us know what you come up with.
