Subject: POSI....Limited Slip???? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 V6 5-speed 2WD CC. I don't know whether I have limited slip or not. SInce I've had the truck, it seems only one wheel (The back right) does anything. It breaks loose often, and when it does, the truck sits there and does not seemt to engage the other rear tire.
With this in mind I have seriously been thinkin about changing the rear-end to a limited slip. Would this also change the gears...actully I don't know what my current gears are??...my guess is the 3.55...but how can I confirm any of this?
TIA

Message: It would only change the gears if you put a different gear ratio in when you converted it to limited slip.

Message: Block the front tires so it wont roll, jack the rear up by the center an inch or so, so both tires are off the ground, put it in neutral and spin one rear tire....if the other spins the same way its Limited Slip, if it turns the oppisite direction (which it prob will from what you explained) its an open rear.
Going to L/S will not affect your ring and pinion (gears) at all....if you want a little better off line accel get lower gears (numerically higher) like 3.92 or 4.10's.

Message: forget the positeve locking diff and the limeted slip or trac loc those are ford and gm prouducts go with a detriot locker no fricton material to burn up and its instant traction with both not wait till the clutches engage. works great on my truck and itll get me from start to finish in just a few sweconds and iff your gonna get lower (numericly higer) gear ratios id go with the 3.90 so its still streetable.

Message: "detriot locker" as in a spool? if so you must not have snapped an axle yet while making a simple turn.
I personally like the control I get out of a clutch type differential, you can use RPM and gas to keep from getting out of control if you want unlike the only lockup or offlock type that detroit is famous for. Ive had both and I only like the ratcheting lockups for offroading when you do absolutly need it now.
You know they had Detroit lockers in the 60's? If they are so good then why did the Hemi come with a clutch type Dana Track Lock?

Message: detroit locker is not a spool it is a ratchet type locking differentaland the only problem ive had with them is when it rains and my tranny down shifts 3-2 backend will come around its only scarey the first few times the danna track lock was a cheaper option than the locker tho the locker was the better choice for tack use

Message: hey check out lockrights NO SLIP..if you dont do any MAJOR off roading it will give you positive traction ..more than limited slip...and no clunking like a detroit
