Subject: Engine Pinging / Add-A-Leaf Kit

Okay... first thing's first. My dad drove the dak outta town today to my brother's soccer tournament and he said my engine is knocking/pinging pretty badly. He's figuring bad gas? That sound right? He told me to buy the 89 Octane gas when I refill it tonight so hopefully that fixes it. If it doesn't, what will i have to do to fix that problem?

Next question... I just got me a new toy. A four-wheeler. It weighs somewhere just under 500 lbs I believe. I use the truck to haul it from Point A to Point B and it really sags my rear end down and definitely makes it drive differently. My steering is not nearly as reactive and I know it's gotta be murder on my rear suspension. I have a 98 Dak R/C 2wd. Would getting the Add-A-Leaf kit help fix that problem or would it be pretty worthless? What would you recommend aside from buying a trailer for the four-wheeler (which I am hopefully going to do sometime later on when I have a place to store it)? Also, any of you have suggestions for giving me a little more 'kick' while towing that sucker around? Or would a new TB, CAI,etc do enough? Thanks everyone!

Josh

I've heard some pros and cons about 89 octane.
I've tried it and it does give ya more low end powerer and get rid of the ping. However ya got remember that this is an under powered V6 and if ya wind it out alittle and shift accordingly, you won't have the ping either.
I just did a muffler swap and installed a Magnaflow. That seems to have added alittle more performance. I couldn't believe the size of the stock muffler on my '00 Sport for a 6er. They could probably use those things on F16's to make them Stealth.

LMAO @ Muffler!

The Pinging: 89 Octane may help in the short run but that is only a temporary fix. That is early signs of internal engine problems. Loose/Worn lifters, Burnt Valves, Bent Push rods....... The list goes on. A good thorough head job (Re-Condition Head, New Valves, Rockers & Push Rods) will stop the pinging. If it's a Knocking then that would be more like Worn Rod bearings.

How many Miles & What kind of Oil do you use? Pinging will usually start about 80K when using Dino Oil and exceeding 3k miles between Oil Changes.

I already got new mufflers on... had the "fake" dual exhaust put on about a year ago. I like the comment bout the stock mufflers though:)

Shank, I have around 43,000 miles on the dak. I got it with 36,000 on the odometer and have changed the oil and filter every 3,000 miles. I use Valvoline 5W-30 (although I'm gonna switch to 10W in the summer months from here on out... grandpa insisted on 5W-30 this time and won).

We're thinking it's bad gas because it never did it before and it just suddenly started after I got gas at a different gas station. My dad just got the regular unleaded fuel and he put in some of that STP gas treatment stuff that's sposed to take water out of the fuel system. He's hoping that will do the trick and if not he said we'll just have to take it in and have a lil work done. So it looks like all is well.

Now anyone got any comments/suggestions on the suspension part of my original post?
Thanks for the responses to the pinging part by the way.

Josh
