Subject: What gears for a 99 V6 5-speed IP: Logged
Message: I'm told one of the best bangs for the buck is to replace the stock gears with a higher ratio. I have a stock 99 V6 5-speed and would like to know the best ratio to go with.
My goal is to have more response off the line.
On my Dak, I don't start feeling the response until higher revs in 2nd (above 2500), will the change in gear ratio increase or decrease shifting times? The delay I have shifting from 1st to 2nd seems critical at times since it is usually at that point an automatic can gain the upper hand :-)

The best "bang for the buck" would be the V8 TB, not the gears. Don't get me wrong, the gears will give you a noticeable performance increase but they can get pretty expensive if you don't know what you're doing. The TB is under a hundred bucks and any fool can bolt it on. I don't know what mods you have but the TB would be the way to go, a good intake wouldn't hurt either.

Message: But then again.....
If you want to go with the gears, upgrade your stock 3.55s(?) with the stock 3.92s. I currently run the Richmond gears with a 3.91 ratio. I wouldn't go with anything higher than 3.92 unless you ain't got any freeways around your parts.

Message: Heres and interesting question, what if I want to go the other way with my gear ratio. I have a '00 Sport 3.9 and 1st seems kinda low to me.
Would rather take off in second execpt ya need to rev it alittle and use more clutch.
Any thoughts?

Message: If you get lower gears, then you'll save on gas but sacrifice power and torque cuz your engine is in the lower rpms, and higher gears will just mean it takes more gas to get your truck up to the same speed with higher rpms which our truck gets most of its muscle. If you wanna go fast there are many mods available and I would suggest reading into all of them and check the stats to see what is really valuable. It takes a lot of time and money.

Message: As far as mods go, here's some I already have:
K&N Air Intake
V8 TB
Flowmaster 50
IAT adjuster
I havn't a clue what I have for gears right now. I have joked that I wish i could get a posi rearend cause this one wheel crap is for the birds. I assume switching to a posi rear is a much bigger deal with a much bigger $$ price? Can this be done though?
As far as starting in second and skippin 1st altogether...I hear ya. 1st is only good up till about 20mph and I have to shift...I assumed switching gears would have an impact on this??
I do alot of highway driving...infact my route to work is one hour each way....majority of it at 65-80mph. I didn't think I would lose gas mileage with the higher gears!...geez, the V6 sucks up alot of gas as it is! Will the stock 3.92s make a big difference?
Note: I'm having a shop do all the work

My 3.91s actually save me on gas as long as I don't mash the throttle. Getting a posi will help also but I beleive they're mainly useful for offroaders. I was thinking about getting one but the $350 pricetag was too major for me, I'm saving up for some traction bars or an X-brace instead. 3.92s will be perfect for you on the freeways since the RPMs won't be as high as, lets say 4.10s, and you probably won't notice a difference from your stockers. As far as your current gears, a little sticker in you glovebox will tell you what you have.
FYI, my friend who works at a Dodge dealer did all the work for me and so I didn't get knocked out by the labor costs.

Message: I wanted the posi for performance and better traction. I don't have limited slip on my truck...just one damn wheel that does all the work. Since it's 2WD, it's not good in the winter either, so switching to a posi for me would be worth the money.
I know nothin about how to go about doin that, but if I could switch to a posi rear...would they have to replace the gears anyway? Isn't that the entire rear axle? Like I said, I don't know much about that, but the price you quoted I could manage and certainly would make a difference for me. If you know more I'd appreciated the info....by the way, nice truck you have there....I like the low ride.

Message: hey magnum i think your best deal is to buy a bone yard complete rear with 3.92 gears and limited slip that way you would have a spare rear just in case you need it. check prices at car-part.com good luck....steved

Message: Jesse, the trans will bolt up to a V8, I don't know if it will last very long or not though, some of the transmissions used were the same as the V8's so if that is the case the trans should work just fine. The computer would need to be changed, and probably some of the wiring as well.
As for actual cost, it will vary because it will depend on how much you can do your self.
I put a 75 Caddy 500 cubic inch into a 77 Chevy pick up and it only cost me about $150 for the meterials, and I did have to have the drive shaft shortened by about 5 inches.
That was an easy swap, but its always easier to swap engines within the same manufacture, Ford/Ford, GM/GM, ect.
Good Luck, let us know how it turns out.
