Message: If my check engine light comes on, how do I retrieve the trouble codes for a 2001 dakota? Would I need the $5k DRB scan tool or do I have to go to a dealer? As far as I know, I cannot use the three quick turns of the ignition switch.

Message: I have a 2001 and I do the key>>on-off-on-off-on-off-on trick (3 times very rapidly then on, not all the way on either until the last on) and that worked for me. It told me to tighten my gas cap so it saved me $65.00 at the dealer.
As for the 98, try the same thing.

Message: If the key trick does not work, go to Autozone and get in the zone!
they have the scan tool and can tell you what the codes are coming up.

Message: GB2000,
for some reason dodge didnt allow the key trick for the 98 year model... maybe the 99 too... not sure. The only way to get the code out on a 98 is to get a scan tool such as the autozone reference above.
