Just bought new Dakota V-6 4 speed auto 4x4. 3 days old now and when taking up on turnpike could not get it past 82 MPH. I did once but on a downhill slope an then it went back to 82 MPH. Feels like it has a governor or something.Plenty of throttle left but no speed . Is this a common thing? Please advise as what I have to do.My old Dakota(95) was not like this at all.

Kind of had the same issue with mine 2002 SXT CC 4x4 Auto when I got it. Let it break in a little. I used to get in the 80's and 90's then things got sluggish. Now on the highway here I easily get over 100.

I also added an Intense Performance Intake and Dynomax Muffler which helped move the air a bit better. Trying to get the cash saved for the F&B 48mm TB, that should satisfy me fully for a while.

Seriously, give your truck a few thousand miles and you should be fine.

Same with every Dak I had 3 now all bought new.

My last one got only 14mpg and seamed to downshift
a lot while in cruse, took a 500 mile round trip
to Milwaukee with only 200 miles on it when I got
back I took it to the dealer to check it out and
everything was OK.

I found on all 3 Daks after you get around
8 to 10,000 miles on them they run much better.
at 8000 on the one I have now the gas mileage
jumped to 20mpg

First get more air and fuel in
Cold air intake
Throttle body
1.7 Rollers.

The computer will compensate

Than get a nice MSD 6A and a SS Blaster coil
a good set of MSD 8.5 super conductor wires
to burn the bigger charge more efficiently with
a set of 3923 Autolites set at .050 with the MSD

Now that you are getting more in you can began
the exhaust work.

JBA Headers
Low restriction muffler like the Dynomax 11748 or a
series 50 flowmaster 2.5 in and out the 2.5 tail pipe
will work just fine no need to drop 300 to $500 on
a catback system that does you no good you just
pay for the name.

Slowly work in that order and when done you will
have a very nice running V6.

After that look at an ASE chip with all the other mods
done you will really notice the computer upgrade.

Of course that was still not enough for me I changed
to a custom ground cam 268 272 that runs with a .480
lift with my 1.7's and stroked it to 3.58 Very Expensive

My V6 is actualy 258 cubic inches 4.23 Liter with
9.8 to 1 comp with a 92 mopar performance PCM
and man does it RUN Nice..!!

I love it and its going to be with me a long long time.

I needed the extra power to compete with the 2 WD
this is a 4X4 and the only Dak around that can out
run me is using a 100 shot of nitrous and has everything
I do except he is not stroked YET.

'02 V6, never had such a problem with a 5-sp manual tranny. 90mph is no sweat for it (almost 100 on a slight down hill), and that was only pushing the engine to just about 3500rpm in 5th. LOL, don't get me wrong, the truck is still slow as hell. It could take what seems like forever to get there!

Sorry, I did not mean to say it got "sluggish" after a few thousand! Was thinking one thing and typing another. It got "better" after and I was able to 100 with no problem. LOL!

"I used to get in the 80's and 90's when things seemed sluggish, then things got better. Now on the highway here I easily get over 100." that is what I meant to say!

Anyway.....love the truck!

Hey, if you can't get it over 82 even with a stock motor, that's a problem. I have a 02 sxt aout 4x4 and it'll do 105 on flat ground and up to 115 downhill. Uphill is another story of course. In your owners manual it says not to take it over 55 for the first thousand miles. Now, i've always used the drive it like you stole it method, but with a brand new motor, you have to be really careful. The worst thing is probably staying at the same speed for too long while it's under a thousand miles. Make sure you vary your speed now and then.

If you read your manual it states.

Do some full throttle once in a while

Its even in the owners manual for the new hemi truck.

http://www.exc40.com/hemi

Doing that will let the computer learn its upper rpm curves
after about 10 of these it will run better under full throttle.

My Dak will easily peg the speedo and more

I run the F&B 48mm throttle body

Is this a 3.9 V6 What year?

You can go 3 ways on the Throttle Body

A use V8 TB for about $125 to $150 if you need
a cable. Budget way to go GOOD

Dan The Fastman a stock V6 that has been ported
to 46mm $250 with exchange $350 W/O BETTER

F&B 48mm $380 to $400 shipped to your door
BEST Machined out of a solid piece of billet
aluminum Brand New

Let me know which way you want to go and I will
tell you were to find what you want.

I went with the F&B after trying the V8 which was
OK but seamed to lose a little low end torque.

Tried the Fastman no low end loss top end about
the same as V8

The F&B had more low end response and better thru
the entire RPM. just crisper and more responsive.
I got my F&B through Jonas at Elite customs.

After the excellent service I got from Jonas I will
be sending him our tax ID and getting all my parts
from him and he's only 300 miles from our shop

The Fastman you would have to get from Dan.

If you want a V6 you need to get ahold of Sam at
So Cal Dakotas or from a bone yard.

It sucks for power but a six looks just as good as a eight, work on the air and throttle body and the power will come for a better change look into a hypertech power programer.

Eddy,

I would go with the F&B 48mm
Its a 3.9 I presume

You can just call Jonas at Elite Customs and order
one for $380 shipped

Phone: 618-877-2664
http://www.elitecustoms.com/

Sam at So Cal Dakota also has them for
$400 shipped

Don't know if he takes credit cards yet I know he
did not back a few months when I wanted some
parts just paypal.

Phone: 618-877-2664
http://www.socaldakota.com/frame.htm

You should consider a cold air intake or at least
a K&N Dropin filter with the TB to get the most
out of it. They dyno out at 15 to 18 RWHP and
about 20 foot pounds of torque a very noticeable
upgrade over stock.

Any thoughts on the F&B 50mm?

TB is going to be my next mod.
