Subject: Manual to Power IP: Logged
Message: I just picked up my 03 Dakota Black. I have manual windows and locks, I want to change them to power, BUT with the factory equipment. I wanted to know if that was possible, if the wiring harnesses are already in the door witch I don't think they are. Can someone tell me if they have done this before. If it is possible. Thanks

Message: I called the dealer near me about this before. To get factory power windows and locks installed, you would need new door panels and wiring. For the dealer to install all of that it is outrageously priced. You could do it yourself, but with new panels and purchasing all you need it would get pricey as well.
Try www.a1electric.com. They have conversion kits for the Dakota there. I bought mine, installed it in about and hour or so. Very easy and works like a charm.

Message: I ordered the kit a couple of days ago... How exactly does it work? I really didnt look at it much. Some said that it was better than the Spal... Does it replace the factory crank and all? I will install it when I get back from Iraq... Jon

Message: Hey, I installed power locks with keyless entry in my 03 Dak. It wasn't too hard. There are NO wiring harnesses in the doors, so don't expect to tap into any factory wiring.
I used the power lock kit from a1electric and bought a keyless entry module on eBay made by Black Widow. I even tapped into my parking lights, dome lights, and horn. Parking lights blink when locking, unlocking, dome lights come on when unlocking, and the panic button on the remote sets the horn honking. You'll need a few extra relays to do all this.
The most difficult part is mounting the door lock actuators. Take your time & do this carefully. I mounted mine near the door latch end of the door, in-line with the rod that connects to the lock. My doors had an existing hole that was exactly where I needed it, and I drilled another one in each door to mount the actuators.
I've had them installed for several months and have had no problems.

Message: akaproph,
They were an easy install. Kit replaces the arms for winding the windows and also caps to put over your holes from the window crank. The kit uses the guts of original window crank to operate the windows "behind the scenes". I was impressed and am very happy.

Message: Hey, how much was the kit from a1electric? It looks like you have to get all the parts seperatly. I was going to try to find a totaled dakota in a junk yard and maybe get the door panels and locks off of that. My 02 SXT doesn't have power anything, so I need the locks also. I'm kinda leary about putting aftermarket kits of both locks and windows on because it might look a little tacky. thanks

Message: I think I paid 115 with shipping. I bought it from ebay. I feel ya on the doors. I though about that, but its really expensive when replacing door panels. Maybe you find a newly wrecked dakota and snag the door panels and workings. The power window thing weary me with it leaving me with the hole in the panel, but the power locks was no problem you dont really know that their there. I have no switches or need for them though. Its just me and its connected to the alarm. Im yet to leave this wrecked country to install all my new goodies. I'll let ya know how the windows go when I return to the states.
