I have a 89 3.9 Dakota and it idles fine, But had no power when driving it. The trans is fine. and no codes other than a 55. When driving, and you accellerate it just bogs down will not go over about 45 mph. Any ideas what the problem could be? Should I check out the cat? Thanks in advance

Also the transducer that goes to the EGR valve has melted down. I plan to replace it and the EGR valve today to see if this helps. What would this indicate?

I would say your cat is shot.

Colasped and pluged sending all the heat back up
the tube is what melted the controler, I have seen
this happen on quite a few trucks and they will
not rev up when pluged

Repalce it or take it off and gut it.

Thanks Larry, Thats kinda what I was thinking too.I've got it to run a little better since I posted, but it still fouls the plugs (running rich). Would a pluged cat cause this also? It's a throtle body injection, if it was a carb I think I could figure it out. But I'm not up to par on alot of the computer controled auto's. Another thing that trips me up is, it doesn't kick out any trouble codes. Is this normal?

After you fix the cat you may need an O2 sensor

Yes a pluged cat will do that the exh cant get out
but you are still adding air and fuel but it has
no excape route.

Do the Cat and see if it don't clear up than the
O2 it reads the oxigen in your exh and tells the
computer how much fuel to add.

I would say its just the cat because you said it
idles ok

I pulled the O2 sensor and it ran a little better for awhile, then it richen up even more. I guess due to the fact it wasn't sending any info back to the OBD on how to set the fuel mixture. Does this sound right? Also wonder why it didn't show any codes other than 55 if 02 sensor is not reading right due to a pluged cat? And thanks again Larry.

Glad I could help Jim.

What we do on the older trucks is take the cat off
cut a square hole in the top remove the guts and
weld the hole shut and put it back on so if you do
get emission tested they will see the cat there.

On the 89 I think you would be emissions excempt
in most states.
