My 98 dak just got out of extended warrenty-- during the past 75K miles, i had the dealer service the tranny every 11-12k miles at every fall season--[I carry the mail in the truck] it requires fluid, filter, gasket AND the bands adjusted every time-- do it right and do it every year if you do heavy work[ as i do ] or if you hot rod the truck-- at about 125$ dollars from the dealer it is cheap compared to 3000$ for a rebuild-- use a tranny cooler also-- and get them to remove the transmission line thermal check valve that is inline going to the cooler

Remove it so that the check valve wont impede flow. Also, the "ball" in the check valve is rubber/plastic and when it gets hot they can deform - and block flow to the cooler (happened to mine).

So, basically I should pay to have this done and not try to do it on my own??

you can do this on your own-- you need to be able to torque the bands down properly-- so you will need a 3/8 drive torque wrench that is accurate--I only had the dealer do it due to it being under the extended warrenty up to 75K miles-- so if they screwed it up it would all be covered by them --

There is a recall notice out there for the check valve ball replacement. I got the recall about a month after I picked up the truck, so it was probably in January. Took less than an hour..
