Subject: Is putting 2,000 Lbs of stone bad?? IP: Logged
Message: so, how much can the bed of the truck hold?? I know the book says 1/2 ton, but I know I can do more.
Today I just put 1,900 Lbs of 3/4 in crushed stone in the bed. I was hitting the stop blocks when going over bumps.
How much has anyone else put their bed of the truck?
Thanks

Message: If your hitting the bump stops, then you've over loaded it. If your suspension can handle it then load away. Only make sure your load is not loose (sliding in the box jaring truck around when accelerating or stopping), and under heavy load or towing don't use the O/D gear on the autos in down or on hilly highways. Dodge is were the O/D thing comes from.

Message: Mine is a 1996 with aftermarket suspension (I'm drawing a blank right now as to what was put in, I bought it used and the guy put them in, not me) but mine is also 4X4.
I will be doing this several times within the next week.
I'll be hauling about another 2,000Lbs of 3/4 in stone and then some stone dust. But the place I'm an getting it is only about 6 miles down the road.
I'm hoping I don't have any problems. I thought about renting a truck to this so I don't put the wear on mine, but I'm only 17 and can't rent a truck. so this will have to do.
thanks for the response.

Message: i just finished scaping the front of my home. from sod to pavers,to retaining wall blocks shes taken it all,not at one time.
i had 63 stones at 27lb a piece, and 26 corners at 18lb a piece. almost 2200lbs. most of it was loaded up to the front of the box.
oddly enough the load wasnt so much a concern as the trans temp, need a cooler and heavier springs,if i plan to do that again.
but to shed a little weight,i left the wife home and made sure i had less than a 1/4 tank of gas when i got going.

Message: Just make sure you unload it as quickly as possible! Leaving heavy loads in your truck will wreck the springs and squish the bushings.

Message: 86 blocks for a retaining wall (the trapezoid shaped ones with the lip on the bottom). Forklift driver placed them in the bed and the poor thing wnet all the way to the bottom AND made the 75 series tires look like 60 series. He eventually got the load all the way up to the cab which gave me my tires back and a couple of inches of travel. It was odd staring at the sky for the 20 mile trip back to my house. Also had the bed completely full of pecan wood before. Half a yard of sand on sveral occasions. The bed volume is too small for a whole yard. These little V6 Daks are great trucks.

Message: maybe try add a leafs. I put pro comp 1.5 inch leafs in and it made the bed a whole lot stiffer. it should really help you with the sagging and hitting the bumpstops.

Message: Okay, well the truck did it. I made 5 more trips, 4 trips were stone dust and 1 trip was for another load of 3/4 in stone.
all of the trips I had just under a ton, I think it was about a 1,700Lbs to 2,010Lbs being the most I had in there.
and the truck is doing great, the only problem is I don't have much gas in the truck now, o-well.
thanks for the great stories and advice.
and I may just do the add a leaf things, but doesn't it make the back of the truck sit up higher then the front??
thanks
