Subject: 1992-1995 Computer IP: Logged
Message: I have a '92 with 3.9L and it rocks! I bought it used. I have a '95 with same package and it's noticeably slower. Both are stock to my knowledge.
What would make the '92 more powerful?
Can I / Should I consider switching the computer? Perhaps the '92 was modified?
I'd appreciate your observations on the difference. BTW gas mileage is about the same, though the '92 has quite a "rumble" in the engine while the '95 has only slightly.

Message: The Computer in '92 & '93 are same, 94 Changed. '95 & '96 are same. Good luck changing the computer and Wiring harness, your looking at about $1,000+ and a Gallon bottle of Excedrin for the headache you are about to endure. Your opening a HUGE can o' worms!
If you want a place to find the 'puter & Harness try www.painlesswiring.com the only pain it's gonna create is the one in your wallet.
Good luck, I suggest just take that money and modify your '95. It may just be different drive gears or may be other things. The '95 uses an A518 Tranny while the '93 has an A500 (Junk). Look around at some of the other posts with engine mods and you could easily make your '95 smoke your '93 with a grand worth of Mods.

Message: Whoa! I'm not considering switching wiring harnesses - I was just asking if I can switch the computers, and you are telling me they do not interchange. Thanks for the info.
I'm not seriously into making the '95 a screamer - just looking at one that runs better than the other and saying....what if?
I do plan to swap the '95 Sport black bumpers for the 92 Dakota chrome before selling though, I'd prefer the chrome on mine.
Oh well!

Message: The 92 has 3" exhaust verses 2 1/2" for the 95, hence the rumble. Appearently people complained about the noise of the 92's so they went to a smaller exhaust thereafter. That's the story I was told anyway. The 92's were also rated at 180hp/230ftlbs as apposed to 175/225 for all other years. I dont know if you can really "feel" that, but those are the only differences I know of that would give the 92 a leg up on the rest.

Message: One other difference between the 92 and 95 is the size of the exhaust manifold. The stock 92 manifold has a larger diameter than the 93 and later manifolds.
