Subject: Ditch the Dakota? IP: Logged
Message: I own a 2001 3.9 Dakota. At least once a day when I hit the gas the truck missfires.I have taken it to the dealership several times. They hook it up to the computer and tell me there is nothing wrong. The last time I took it in they replaced the wires and the plugs, and it was fine for about 2 weeks. It's missfiring again and now, aftr driving for about twenty minutes the inside of my cab smells like burnt hair.I also only get 12mpg city and 14mpg hway.I'm taking it to the dealership this week, but they will probably say the computer doesn't detect any problem. Any suggestions?

Message: I think im having that same problem. I have noticed worse gas milage after installing a poweraid TB spacer and about 2 weeks ago this girl I know was in her car behind me and when were on the highway she pulled up to my window and told me that my truck stank so I parked it and smelled my exhaust pipe and burnt hair is exactly what it smelled like. What did you end up having to do? Thanks

Message: Anytime someone mentions that their vehicle smells bad coming out the exhaust, I immediatly suspect that it's their Catlytic Convertor. You both should get it checked. A plugged or bad convertor will produce bad smells, low power, and low gas-milage.

Message: Maybe an animal crawled up your exhaust pipe and died! Get some type of metal wire and snake it
through your pipe to check it out or tap along the pipe to listen if it is clogged.

Message: it was wierd..the other day i drain my battery using the headlights to play basketball and it started, but it sounded bad, so i ran it for a while and the went home and left it. the next day i get in, it starts and then shuts off imediatly. it would only stay on if i held the gas. eventually we just started driving and it snapped out of it. but i though that once it starts it will stay on if its a battery problem, why would it go off?

Message: I'm having the same problem that ONeill had. I'm driving along and go to accelerate when the engine misfires. It happens all the time. The engine also has low power and poor MPGs. The catalytic converter sounds like a good possibility. I have not noticed any smell but I just purchased a new set of spark plug wires (like ONeill) let's see what happens next...

Message: Good day, gentlemen:
You Americans have to keep a cat installed on your vehicles, right? Too bad. I had mine cut out, what a difference! Of course I live in Canada, we don't have to have our vehicles tested for emissions. LOL.
Best Regards, Alex

Message: Lil Blackdak, my truck was doing the same thing, and it was just the battery. I guess at idle, the alternator isn't making enough power to run the ignition.
