Subject: info-92 dist.question IP: Logged
Message: i have a 92 dak that pops out the exst, most when its cold, some when its warm.
it runs good, good power, starts good etc etc
a few months back a guy was explaining about something in the dist that could cause this, had something to do with the timing not being advance.
i,ve checked the archives and can,t find it,he said this problem could be fixed with a welding rod and that snap-on had a bulliten out on this,18 or 19 i,m not sure.
my question is this does anyone know or how to fix this ?
thank-you

Message: You may be talking about indexing the distributor. It's like setting time on the older carbed cars. A snap-on scanner can be used to set it too. 0 is the factory setting I think, got mine on a +5. Seems to do good. Search for indexing the distributor, I know you can find the post. If not get back to us.

Message: deep purple, could and would you explain this dist indexing,i know about indexing your plugs, but this is a new one for me.
i don,t think this is what the guy was explaining about using a welding rod,but maybe,i,m willing to try this also.
thank-you

Message: Be sure you do not have a carbon track on your cap.
It will look like a piece of hair stuck inside.
The pickup in the dist tells the injectors when to
pulse and spray fuel.
You can get them close by setting the motor on TDC
with the mark on the vibration damper.
Always rotate clockwise to take up the slack in
the timing chain if you overshoot go around once
past mark than come around to it again.
32mm socket will fit the crank bolt in center of
pully to rotate.
Be sure the rotor is aming at the #1 plug wire.
Now look straight down there will be a line on the
plastic pickup unit that says cyl center the rotor
button over this line and you will be +2 -2 and
it will run good.
I used to set them this way all the time but now
I use a $2000 snap on scanner.
Everyone that I had set that way were +2 to -2
checking the ones I set after I got the scanner.
most are set to -6 at the factory not 0 bumping
them up will make these motors run a lot better.
My V6 runs best at +3 was at -6

Message: Here is a procedure posted by Dakota Dan, Hope it will help. Didn't find the weld rod reference.
Distributor Indexing
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Vehicles may exhibit surging, light bucking, or intermittent engine misfiring. This will most likely occur when the vehicle is at operating temperature, and under a light load at approximately 2000 RPM. This condition may be caused by a mis-indexed distributor. The following procedure is an alternative to the indexing procedure outlined in the service manual.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This procedure outlines an alternative distributor indexing procedure.
Connect a voltmeter to the distributor sensor connector by removing the end seal and carefully back probing the connector. Connect the positive lead to the sensor output pin (pin 3, either a tan wire with a yellow tracer or a gray wire, depending on vehicle application). Connect the negative lead to the sensor ground pin (pin 2, a black wire with a light blue tracer).
Rotate the engine clockwise as viewed from the front, until the number one piston is at Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke. The timing mark on the vibration damper should line up with the zero degree
(TDC) mark on the timing chain case cover.
Continue to rotate the engine slowly clockwise until the V6 or V8 mark (depending on engine type) lines up with the zero degree (TDC) mark on the timing chain case cover. The V8 mark is 17.5°after TDC and the V6 mark is 147°after TDC. NOTE: DO NOT ROTATE THE ENGINE COUNTER CLOCKWISE. IF THE ENGINE IS ROTATED BEYOND THE MARK, RETURN TO STEP 2 AND REPEAT THE PROCEDURE.
Loosen the distributor clamp bolt.
With the ignition switch in the ON position, rotate the distributor slightly in either direction until the voltmeter switches between the sensor transition point of 0 and 5 volts.
Adjust the distributor as close as possible to either side of this transition point and tighten the distributor clamp bolt to 19-26 N-m (170-230 in.lbs.) .

Message: Its 14.7 not 147 the V6 fires a cyl every 60 degrees. 120 crank rotation dist turnes 1/2
the amount the crank does 2 to 1
On the damper you will see V6 V8 marks with a good
light shinning on it.
Looks like you got that off speed tweaks site.
You can use the volt meter as described just raid
someones sowing kit and get 2 stick pins to put
in the wires, cant remember color off hand because
I now use a scanner.
