Message: Check the fuel filter. Try replacing the throttle position sensor too. Take some good TBI cleaner to it too.
OH, WTF (LOL) year is it?

Message: Dragon,
My '99 3.9 cc auto did this one day. I slammed on the brakes real hard top prevent rear ending someone and the truck had stalled. Every time it would start back up easily, but the minute i took my foot off the gas it would stall. I tried for the next 15 minutes or so with no luck. I grabbed a ride with a friend to get another vehicle and when the tow truck driver met me back at my truck about an hour later, GUESS WHAT? The truck started right up and idled perfectly! I drove it to the dealer just in case, and all they could say was that my fuel pump needed to be replaced to the tune of $750.00 I said no thanks, and have left it in. Stills works fine and hasn't happened since.
My vehicle previously use to stall on occasion making left hand turns into my driveway, and would idle erradictly while shifting into park, although I haven't experienced these symptoms in a while. Knock on wood.

Message: We had some police cars do that. Usually a good plenum cleaning (ford ) or sometimes the Idle Air Control motor goes out. I usually can get them started by "feathering" the accelerator to feed it
some gas and they will run but will kill when stopped. A good maintenance with F Inj. cleaner helps.

Message: I have had this problem a couple of times in my 97 3.9. I had the battery problem (dead cell) but it would not crank up after it died. I had to keep jumping it off. Then I had it again a couple of months later. I replaced my O2 sensors and have not had a problem since. I have 124k miles and it is still running. Still doesn't compare to my 96 z28 though.

Message: I have a 93 Dodge Dakota v6 3.9L. While driving the truck automaticly shuts off. It use to only do this while I was turning left, but now it does it while I am going over 60mph straight too. I took it to two mechanics and they both could not find anything wrong because they could not replicate the problem. Sometimes the truck dies 4 or 5 times in a row and then doesn't die for a month. Also the oil pressure drops to zero when slowing down. The crank sensor and fuel gauge and fuel filter has been replaced. My fuel pump and battery are fine. Any suggestions?

Message: Anthony - check wiring , connections in
' fuse box ' under hood , drivers side
and unwrap and check wiring in the harness from
there back to the firewall .
at one point at least 3 or 4 wires will be
'joined ' " spliced " , LOOK at this closely
will probably need to be redone with a decent
connector , or soldered and re taped...
May need " better " oil , or rebuild ??

Message: Had the say problem with my 99'. Took it to the dealer about 3 monthes after I got the truck (Bought it from a friend he was having the problem and did not tell me about it thought that he had it fixed-the mechanic told him it was the cran ksensor so we changed it and it did not help) the dealer hooked it up and told me that the PCM was . Still under warrantee for me sp they ordered the PCM and changed it for free. So your PCM may be about to go. They are expencive though, somewhere around $300 or so. Maybe you can get the performance one for your 93' for around $350 or so. Hope this helps.

ones are a little crappy..
If they don't seal properly , there is a sensor
somewhere that makes everything go cuckoo...
95 or older , check out EGR valve/solenoid..

Message: The oxygen sensor itself is a very dependable unit. Occasionally the oxygen sensor will fail with an internal open circuit. The most common problem that occurs with oxygen sensors is contamination. There are three common sources of contamination for the oxygen sensor:
RTV silicone - a commonly used sealer and adhesive. The fumes from this adhesive can coat the oxygen sensor, slowing its ability to respond to changes in the oxygen content of the exhaust. When the oxygen sensor becomes con- taminated with silicone, it delivers a lean signal to the EEC computer.
Leaded fuel - not readily available now. When the oxygen sensor becomes contaminated by leaded fuel, the output voltage will be stuck above the crossover point. This is a rich exhaust indication. Although this rarely occurs by accident, be sure to check the contents of any fuel additives being used to ensure that it does not contain tetra-ethyl lead.
Soot contamination - The two primary sources are oil and fuel. Oil soot is a result of a mechanical engine condition such as worn rings or valve guides. Fuel soot is either the result of a rich-running engine or a misfire. Either form of soot impedes the operation of the oxygen sensor. The output voltage remains constant at around 0.5 volts.
Testing the sensor:
Most Rams:
left sensor - black/darkgreen wire
right sensor - tan/white wire
ground - black/light blue
1996 models with pre cat and post-cat sensors:
Pre-cat sensor - tan/white wire
Post-cat sensor - orange/black
First, try this simple test of the oxygen sensor. With the oxygen sensor connected, start the engine and allow it to run at 2,000 rpm for two minutes. Connect a digital voltmeter between the signal wire and ground. With the engine idling, watch the voltage reading on the voltmeter. You should observe the voltage toggling above and below 0.450 volts. If the voltage is stuck high, or in the middle, create a vacuum leak and look for a response. If the voltage is stuck low, or in the middle, goose the throttle and look for a response. If there is no response in the voltage, replace the oxygen sensor.
A more thorough test of the oxygen sensor circuit involves two steps.
Disconnect the connector between the oxygen sensor and the computer. Connect a high-impedance voltmeter between the oxygen sensor and ground. Start the engine and allow it to run until the upper radiator hose is hot and pressurized. Hold the oxygen lead to the computer with one hand and touch the positive battery terminal with the other hand. This delivers a small voltage to the computer, causing the computer to believe that the engine is running rich. The engine rpm and the oxygen sensor voltage should drop.
If there is no response, connect the oxygen wire that goes to the computer to ground. This makes the computer believe that the engine is running lean. The rpm and the oxygen sensor voltage should both rise.
If the system passes either test, then the system is working properly. If the rpm changes but the oxygen voltage does not, replace the oxygen sensor. If neither changes, check for continuity on the wire to the PCM. If the wire is good and the connection is good, replace the PCM

Message: If it's stalling almost immediately (and it's not clear how long after start from his post), it's not the O2 sensor. It takes at least two minutes to kick in.
Not the battery, either, if it cranks fine.
Suspect the AIS, that has a major effect on idle speeds and is supposed to prevent stalling after release of the throttle. Clean or replace.
Check fault codes first. Always. It's not always the item indicated, but it's always good to have the information.

Message: I have a Dodge Dakota, 2001 V6 4x4. It has 90,000 miles and I have been good about keeping up with all the maintenance. About 4 months ago, it started stalling. I noticed that when it stalled, it was always warmed up, typically there was additional draw on the engine (air conditioning, fan, etc.) It stalled when I would be in traffic - I would stop and when I would put my foot back on the gas peddle, it would stall, (not a safe thing in traffic). When I go to start it back up, it runs great. It has stalled when I stop when exiting the freeway. It has stalled on left hand turns. When I put it in park, the idle lopes up and down and almost stalls. If the air/fan is off, it usually stops. I have taken it to two different dealers who both did diagnostic tests and said nothing was wrong with it. Last month I had to replace a sensor for the blower for the air/fan. I had no problemsfor a while. Now, the truck is back to it's old tricks. A friend of mine told me about this web. site. Hope you can help me. Thanks
