Message: I've had good luck with Castrol GTX, anybody use the 10W40? I'm using 10W30 and when its really hot outside, the oil pressure gauge goes really low (a litle below the normal range). I have a '91, 3.9 V-6 with 115,000 miles. I put 220,000 miles on my previous vehicle before it was totaled, used strictly Castrol GTX w/o any problems. I think changing the oil every 3,000 miles made the biggest difference.

Message: JUST SAY NO! to any penzoil products! My uncle build race engine's for drivers at the Corpus Christi Int'l Speedway. He put $7500 into an engine and the stubborn @$$ Driver was determined to use Penzoil, After 1 race they broke down the engine and it looked worse than my blown 3.9 w/217,000 miles on it! Penzoil breaks down rapidly under heat and pressure and actually cooks to your major engine parts. After your 3,000 miles pull the dipstick, smell the oil and rub it between your fingers, If it smells like my wife's cookin (hope she don't read this) and feels gritty than run engine flush through it 1st before you change your Oil.
Castrol GTX is good oil and I've also had good success with it in My '90 Ranger 2.9 and my '86 Dodge 2.sumptin (Made by Mitsubishi)D50 , I tried the Castrol Syntec which is OK, Not Impressed with the Valvoline Synthetic. Really disliked the Penzoil Synthetic (changed it after 2,000 miles).
So far the best Synthetic I've used has been the Mobil 1, Pull the dipstick after 6,000 miles and it's not gritty, smells like fresh oil. I have run Mobil 1 synthetic up to 10,000 and only changed it 'cuz I felt guilty but it still smelled and felt fresh. Mobil 1 is naturally dark right out of the bottle so you can't really judge when it needs to be changed by the color.
I'm with J&J up there, Filter every 3,000 & Oil every 6,000-7500.
If you have tried the Penzoil "Oil Extender" better get about 3 cans of engine flush and some better oil to flush out the Sludge and Junk it left on your heads, upper engine parts, In your oiling journals in the crank and rod bearings!
I do a Lil bit O' driving, My '98 Jeep was purchased new with 617 miles in Jan '99. Wife flipped it end over end in Feb '03 and it had 175,000 miles on it and still ran like a charm. Mobil 1 synthetic 10W30 or 10W40 depending on the season since I owned it! My '93 Dak was purchased in Nov'99 with 63,000 Hard miles and I blew then engine @ 217,000 VERY HARD miles on 5/19/03.
Castrol is good Petrolium Oil, Mobil 1 is Best synthetic. The jury is gonna hafta give AMSOIL the "Shank Drivin test" and I'll get back with you in about 7,000 miles.
Laterz,
Shank

To ask "Which is Best" is a question that is left up to interpretation and emotion. The question should be "Which is better for my application?".
To keep it simple:

Message: I just read all the posts on the Thread above and My Uncle which is a ASE Master mechanic and a Master Dragster engine builder has shown me the proof (Left over results) of engines that run several types of Oil.
Dino Oil such as Penzoil was a total disaster on an engine after 1 race. Castrol and Valvoline were much better. Full Synthetic looked almost brand new.
When purchasing Oil either Dino or Synthetic you get what you pay for.
A person posted that he uses Wal-Mart Tech 2000..... Don't! I won't even run that stuff in my Lawnmower. I'm still trying to find it in print but I've been told by several sources that it is Recycled Oil and the weight listed is the Average. Think about it, You take your Oil to a recycler and dump it into a Huge vat basically mixing multiple types of Oils and grades together. All they do is strain it, Clean it, take the average Oil weight and Bottle it.
PARAFFINIC... I have a problem with this word, it's fancy for Parrafin=WAX. Slick50's Main ingredient is Paraffin which causes sludge deposits in your engine. And even a Valvoline fan that posted the content of thier Oil and the 1 word that stuck out most in my mind was "PARAFFINIC", Wax... I don't want it in my engine and I hope you don't either.
If anybody has a reason I shouldn't run Mobil 1 Full synthetic (Except the $4.97/Qt price tag) please speak up I'm always open to suggestions.
K, I'm up to 4 1/2 cents now better pass off the soapbox -------------> NEXT

Message: I wish you could edit posts 'cuz I forgot 1 thing.
My father run's AMSOil faithfully in his Twin 8V92 Detroit Turbo Diesel's on his Hatteras Yacht and you couldn't buy him a new engine to get him to change to a different Oil after the last engine replacement ($8,000).

Message: I have always used Dodge vans for my business.
I live in In Lincoln Nebraska, in the winter time I used straight 20 weight must have a good battery and good spark plugs/cap & rotor, in the hot summers I use straight 50 weight. That particular Van has 300,000 miles on it 3.9 liter and I drive it every day. You ain't going to change my mind. They've all been this way for the last 30 years.
