I just put on a custom ported and polished TB and all i gotta say is this thing kicks major @ss. The power difference from idle till about 4500 is unbeleivable. Just had to tell someone. By far the bes mod I've ever done (besides the 3.92 LSD)

Yes you can advance or retard the timming.

Are you haveing detanation probs.

First try a set of colder plugs
3923 or 5223 if you retard your timing you will
lose hp and gas milage.

If you are running nitrous or a blower judt get
a nice MSD controler.

What year and motor are you running with what mods

ASE read thread http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/v6/5125.html

2001 rc 5spd v6 (38k miles)

Flowmaster
180 Thermostat
Open air element filter
Ported stock TB
3923 plugs

Pinging started at about 2k miles before mods. 92 octane gas helps a little but not completely. Really bad pinging on the hills or under load.

Just would like to see if retarding it would help.

So J&J I'm curious, how much money have you put into mods and what type of HP/Torque gains did you get, taking from your name you got them for discount price because you are a mechanic but how much would it cost for some one who buys it from stores, or mechanics.

If those are your only mods and your truck pings that bad there is something wrong with it. The first thing to check is for a leaking plenum gasket. Remove your airhat, and open the butterflies on the throttle body. Now look down inside of the intake manifold. There will probably be a thin coat of oil on the plenum pan which is basically the bottom of the intake manifold. If there is more that just a film of oil thats your problem. The plenum gakets have been a big problem on the magnum motors. If it does turn out to be your plenum gasket and you want to add a little performance while your fixing it, let me know and I can set you up with a ported manifold. If ya have any questions shoot me an email gmconner@juno.com

Your next action should be trying to decarbonize the cylinders. When carbon builds up on the piston tops it actually raises the compression atio and will cause the motor to detonate (ping) with lower octane gas. If you have one close to you I would got to a OMC (outboard marine corp) dealer. Most marinas carry their stuff. Get 2 cans of omc combustion chamber cleaner to decarbonize your cylinders. The first can run it through your throttle body while the truck is running. Now shut the truck off and pull all the spark plugs. Distribute the contents of the second can equally into all 6 cylinders. Reinstall the plugs so nothing else gets in there and let it sit over night. Fire it up the next morning and take it out and get on it. It will probably be blowing all sorts of stuff out the tail pipe. If its not your plenum gasket this should do the trick assuming the truck is in otherwise good tune.

If you havent done it yet, replace your distributor cap and rotor and plug wires. having bad wires could cause some detonation if they are arcing between one another.

I will try to answer all the questions, just find the
one you are looking for I think 3 people are asking
different questions.

As for cost, I put just over $2000 into this truck
in the last 6 months to a year. plus a lot of work
that is just my labor free of course. That's just
the motor. So about 50 to 75 hp gain and about
60 foot pounds of torque.

I pulled about 247hp and 290 foot pounds of torque
on my last dyno run with a fastman. Have not got
a run with the F&B yet, should be a little more.

With the new cam ASE Chip plus 3 degrees advance on
the crank sensor. I could not get any more advance or I
got bad piston ping.

Stock with Jet 2 I am running 7 degrees advance with no
ping, at 8 I get a little. I can get 10 on my mount.

KRC explains how to move your crank sensor on there
site I just took it a little farther, Bought a replacement
crank sensor pulled the wire back and cut the sensor in
half. Than I built an adjustable bracket and marked it
using my degree wheel I use to set the center line on
the 3 bolt cams we run in our B and RB engines 383
440.

You can retard or advance it like 3 degrees the way KRC
explains it. You would have to slot it and move it up towards
the manifold away from the oil filter to retard the timing.
Towards the top of the bell housing. Be sure to remove the
rubber gromet before you try to move it. Its located on
the pasenger side back of motor in the bell housing.

KRC Timing Page

You can set your TPS voltage by rotating the sensor but first
you must drill out the bushings and use some flat washers on
the bolts. Just turn the key on do not start put the pos lead on
the middle terminal and the neg to ground, be sure you use
a good digital volt meter, tighten down slowly making sure
it stays where you want it. Will give better Throttle response.

Explained on speed tweaks site.

Speed Tweaks Tips

Injector sink is when your injectors pulse and spray fuel.
Most are set at -6 from the factory, You can set this with
a volt meter or by putting it on top dead center on the balancer
both valves closed on #1 just be sure the rotor is pointing at
the #1 plug wire on the cap and you will be there. Now take
your finger and push the rotor counter clockwise lightly to remove
any slop, Also only turn the crank clockwise if you over shoot
just go around 2 times do not rotate the other way this will take
any slop out of your timing chain. clockwise only.
Crank size 32mm fits

I have found that most trucks run best at +3 to +6 mine
was best at +3

Now there should be a line and CYL mark on the pickup in the dist.
look straight down and center the button on the rotor with the line.
I have done it this way and can get -2 to +2. Not the most accurate way
but it does work to get you close.

I finally broke down and bought a snap on scanner for $2000 so I
could set them more accurate. But I do a lot of trucks so for me it
was a must have.

Also explained on speed tweaks.

Speed Tweaks Tips

I know a lot of people are not to happy with Bernd but he does know
what he is talking about, He got me on a simple trade for some old style
modulator valves he wanted to trade I sent him 1 but never got what
he said he would trade me for it.

If I did not answer your question just drop me an email
at jtrick@newnorth.net and I will try to help you more.

Unlike some I will help anyone who asks maybe that is
why we have been in business for over 30 years.

Are you sure your dyno numbers were not 147hp and 290tq not 247/290? There is no way in hell with those mods a 3.9v6 put down 247rwhp..just not possible. I have alot more mods to mine and know it will not break the 200 mark at the wheels n/a.

No they are right,

I am running a differant torque converter,
pistons and cam and some other internal mods
that I will not mention on this board.

Also had to add apexi controler because the
computer just could not handle all the mods
I am hopeing the ASE reprograming will help.

This truck has been almost a year building.

I am also working with holley trying to get
a completly programable system on this truck
and screw the mopar controler.

The plan was 300hp but as you can see it fell
short by more than 50hp. I would say that 250
is about all you can get out of this motor.

50 to 75 HP is not that hard to obtain on any
motor, I have been building Mopars for over 30
years now I supose now you will tell me I can't
get 500 to 600 ponies out of a 383 huh.

My last 383 with a six pack dynoed at 550 its in
a 69 road runner and pulls low 10's

I'm in now way doubting your work with a 383. But there is a big difference in a carbed big block and a computer controlled small block. I'm interested in what you have done to your truck. I have been playing with the 3.9's for quite some time. I'd appreciate if you sent me an email

Well you could stroke a 3.9 to like a 4.7 according to some people I've talked to, thats around $3k but that plus some overbore might take it up to a 5.0 or more, if the block can take it?
