Subject: '93 Won't Shift into Overdrive, check?

Hey guys, 93 3.9l 4x4 4spd auto (a500?) The trans sometimes will not shift into overdrive. I've heard that the transmission checks several sensors such as temp, speed, tps. I've also heard it can be a solinoid, and not necessarily requiring a overhaul. Can someone with some experience give me some advice on what to check before spending $1000 on a rebuild?

thanks!

My husband's 99 dodge dakota is having the same problems. he just had silinoids replaced and that didn't solve the problem.

My 93 3.9 Auto did that, but it was worse in hot weather. It turned out to be the speed sensor. It did show as a fault when I read out the codes, by the way.

Hey Chris, my '99 5.2 4x4 is doing the exact same thing, I've got a trans cooler which helped a bit but on the hot days or long travel the problem reappears..

The code I get is something about 3rd to 4th problem, was yours the same or was it saying speed sensor faulth or something ??

My 2000 3.9L 4x4 does the same thing. It won't shift into overdrive sometimes. I can run my engine up to 3000rpms and 60 mph in 3rd and it still won't shift, but when it does (obviously) it slams into OD. **wish I had a 5 spd**

I'm having the same problem, the no overdrive and it stalls out when I first start it unless I keep my foot on the accelerator a touch.

Out to try a new TPS.. just got new plugs, wires and distributor too to see if that works. here goes.

UBK, you may not need a TPS. Have your battery load tested first.

fixed!

It started with a rough start on damp mornings and after the truck had cooled down. I had to give it a bit of gas to keep it running for a minute.

This morning I pulled the connection to what I suspected was the bad TPS and I didn't plug it back in. That caused it to not go into overdrive.

New TPS later and we're good!

This weekend gets the new plugs, wires, dist and now a tranny fluid change due to driving a good 300 kilometers at high RPMs. Thanks for the tips on this site everyone, always appreciated. 3923s going in.

I wonder how many good TPS' are replaced because they started the truck and ran it long enough to get the battery up and get a good TPS reference voltage.

I have a 93 V6 doing the same thing, seems i read somewhere else that there are 2 coolant temp sensors and one of those (one with 2 wires) can cause the problem. That seems to be the cheapest part to replace. Does anybody have any idea what else to check? I havent had it scanned for codes yet.
Thanks!!!

A faulty thermostat can prevent overdrive operation. This will present as a code 17 and the gauge will show no warmup, or excessive time warming up.

A faulty CTS will show a code 22. It's the 2-wire sensor next to the thermostat.

A common cause of no overdrive is the solenoid pack on the right side of the valve body. The mesh screen can clog, or the solenoid body can loosen from the valve body. Tightening the screws can fix that. Sometimes sitting for weeks can cause it, again, clogged screen or dirty transmission fluid.

I recently bought a 92 Dakota with 3.9L and rear wheel drive. The truck will shift into 4th when cold and then will not shift as it gets up to operating temp. I guess it is time to check out the two wire temp sensor. Right?

Im having the same problem, I checked the codes and the
only one was code 33, which is an a/c clutch relay. But who
needs a/c haha :) I think what im gonna do is force the
overdrive solenoid to ground via toggle switch and if that
dont work ill start with the tps cuz I know that was a
common problem on dodge trucks. Keep the thread going!
