I have a bone stock 2002 SXT automatic. The 3.9L motor just doesn't have the kind of power I want. I was looking at some pics of the cold air intake kit's and it doesn't look like they suck the air in very far from where the stock intake is. My question is this: If I get a high flow air filter to replace the stock one will it be much less power then if I got the whole kit? Also, I plan to get an exhaust, bore my throttle body, maybe a chip. What else can I do. And I can't afford to buy everything at once, so is it harmful to do somethings without having other things done? Can I build up slowly, or should I save and buy everything at once. Your help is greatly appreciated.

thats right... listen to "v8", he seems to know what he's talking about... besides the fact that you said you cant afford much, you should trade your truck in that is probably barely a year old... that way you would be so upside down on it you would have to put $3000 down on another kota!

brilliant!

For some of us, trading in the V6 for the V8 doesn't make sense financially. I was also kinda depressed for the first couple of months after I bought my 6ixer but things happen for a reason and I am happy with my decision.

First of all, what kind of gear ratio do you have? Mine came with 3.55s which gave it no kind of pick-up whatsoever. The first thing I did was replace the stock 3.55s with Richmond's 3.91. Big difference! I could actually pass and merge on the freeway without flooring the SOB. After that, I invested in a Fastman TB, Exhaust, and a Volant intake. Still not a V8 but they all came together to make a big difference over stock.

My advice to you is, trade-in the truck if you are financially Blessed but if not, keep it and you'll have a lot of fun trying to make the most out of the 239 cubic inches. Oh yeah, first thing you should invest in is a V8 TB!

my gear are 3.92, so it that works pretty well. I'm not trying to race my truck, if i was doing that i wouldn't have bought a truck. I just want to get the most power and milage i can. What should i put on it first, and if I only do one upgrade at a time will it hurt it at all.

jeremy,

well everything helps a little... its good that you already have a great axle ratio so i think you should invest in a nice muffler (flowmaster, gibson and so on)... but just a muffler, not a complete exhaust kit. Also try to get your hands on a V8 throttle body and a nice cold air intake (many brands to choose from, inlcuding homebrew).

if you have any questions (specific) just ask me here on this thread.

did you find one. I have issues with the 180 but
want to run cooler 185 would be just right or is that a typo.

Thanks a lot intense, appreciate the help. Why just a muffler and not the whole kit? And i was looking on K&N's website for the FIPK fit for my truck and it gave me the part # so i went to the parts store to order it, and it's just the replacement filter. Where can i go to find the specific one. thanks

if you want the FIPK you will have to tell it you have a 5.2 or 5.9 You will get the same performance from just a muffler swap as for a whole exhuast... just trying to save ya some money.

The biggist bang for the buck would be a V8
throttle body 96 and newer for your truck and
a home brew cold air intake.

$50 to $100 for the body depending on what your
local bone yard charges for one and $30 for a
new cable if you need one right from Chrysler.

Sam at So. Cal Dakota can set you up with the
whole package also.

I've got a 1997 dakota 4wd auto with a 3.9 magnum V6.. I've been trying to increase the road-drivability (as stated above, being able to pass on the freeway would be nice). It's got 115k on it, and has a pretty rough idle. Today after changing the oil I'm going to clean out the throttle body and see if that helps.

I looked for a K&N FIPK for my baby but K&N says they don't make one for my particular model; is that just a line? They have an air filter but not the full replacement kit...

Thanks,

Pete
