Subject: Supercharger or Bolt ons IP: Logged
Message: Alright already! Good Grief! I am about to go nuts. In an earlier post, I asked the straight forward and simple question that most folks ask....how to add a noticieable amount of horsepower without breaking the bank (something typically less than $1500 total for my '94 3.9L mag dak). I thought I got pretty good advice: K&N filters, V8 tb, MSD6A, MSD blaster coil, Crower 1.77 RR, and flow master exhaust. Just when I'm about to fork out the bucks - I get this "it's a massive waste of money thing." All the bolt-ons will give you maybe a total of 10 or less hp - something not really noticeable. I am hearing things like a supercharger will supply the difference needed. Will someone please enlighten me before my wife make me buy a bedroom set with the money (something she has been strongly recommending).

Message: with all of those mods you will get more than 10 hp. Most people thing that a s/c is god's gift to hp junkies... WRONG! I believe that the powerdyne/vortech models only add about 60-75 hp on 5.2/5.9 (speedtweaks dyno testimonials). Now remember thats on a V8 with a lot more cubic inches than our 239 V6. All in all you might get about 35-40 hp from a much more expensive bolt on.

Message: Ya with the mods you mentioned above your probably looking at around 20 horses to the rear wheels. That will definitely give you some pickup in your light 94 Dakota!

Message: So it sounds like I should stick with the bolt-ons for right now. I'm not looking to race every rice rocket mini car on the road, but am looking to have fun driving around. Outside of the add-ons I listed above, any other suggestions that will not take major modifications (not a mechanic)?

Message: I agree, I have all of those mods and a set of ASP underdrive pullies and JBA headers. The only thing I don't have is the MSD ignition setup. The MSD will help if the cylinder pressure is increased due to high compression pistons, turbo, or supercharger. But on a stock engine the stock ignition setup puts out good juice (if there are good wires, brass cap & rotor, and good spark plugs). You won't see a significant HP gain changing to MSD on a stock V6.
And before someone says something, show me the dyno run of a stock V6 and how a MSD setup improves HP. If there is, I have not seen it yet, proof then I'll be buying a MSD setup. But the MSD is costly and there are other items that are proven to add HP that I chose to spend my money on.
