Subject: v6 running like a v8? IP: Logged
Message: Honestly--what would it take to get a 3.9 magnum to run similar to a stock 4.7? Would the intake/exhaust & throttle body come close or is something more drastic like a supercharger required? I'm looking at doing an intense stage II w/ 7" filter, dynomax cat-back, and a fastman or f&b throttle body. I love my truck, but I want to give it more balls. It's bone stock right now, but I only want to do the above mods if there's going to be a noticable "seat-of-the-pants" improvement. btw - I've got a 2003 CC 4x4 3.9 SXT Auto w/ 3.92 gears
If you can't say anything nice, please don't say anything at all. No need for replys like "should have got a v8". I think we've all seen enough of those and there's nothing wrong with making the most out of whatever motor you happen to have.
I'm posting this because I couldn't find any similar threads, but I think it's a question of lot of stock dak owners probably have.
Thanks bros!

Fastman 46mm TB
Intense Stage II 7" Power-Stack
Dynomax catback

I'm not too excited about tearing into the engine to put in rockers while the truck is under warranty. I know headers are great for high-end horsepower, but wouldn't they kill your low-end?
I've only got like 700 miles on my truck, so if I'm gonna do headers now is the time.

Getting 15-20 HP more out of my dak may be good enough, but I don't know what that's going to "feel" like.

Message: I have the following on my V-6: Flowmetrics 48 mm TB, Volant intake, JBA headers, IAT adjuster, Gibson cat back, removed clutch fan. Mine is a 2000 CC 4x4, auto, 3.92 gears, 31" tires. Against a comparable stock 4.7 truck, it is no where close. I can stay about even with a stock 5.2 CC 4x4, auto with 3.92 gears and 31's. But the 4.7 I played with had 3.55 gears, auto, CC, 4x4, 31's, and it wasted me like nothing. Would have really killed me if it had 3.92 gears.
Based on other people's results on the dyno, my butt dyno, etc., I estimate that my mods added 20 HP or so at the rear wheels. To match up to the 4.7, I expect I would need nitrous or a supercharger.
On the headers, I lost a lot of low end torque until I added the throttle body. I seemed to get all my low end back with a bunch of added top end power after I put the Flowmetrics TB on.

I may sell my truck (which I bought new no more than 2 weeks ago) and buy an older V8 Dakota. Then when I get out of college I'll have the money to buy new again. That's probably what I should have done in the first place, but my family talked me out of buying a used car afraid that it would break down. How realiable do late 90's Dakotas tend to be after 50K miles or so?

Your Rents where most likely looking out for you, with the new vehicle you have a warranty to take care of things if you have any problems, I say enjoy the truck as it is ( maybe some simple mods) get your education then when you get out of school and get a good job you will be ready to take on something new to drive.

Roadrunner, if it's been taken care of it should be reliable till at least 125,000 miles. around 100,000 miles you start to have problems with starter, alternator, waterpump, those sorts of things. My truck has 86K and runs like new. I am a professional mechanic so i keep up on the maintenance but a mid 90's Dakota shouldn't leave you stranded. The only thing i have had to replace in the past 15K miles is the waterpump, which was starting to leak, it probably could have went another 5K miles though.

I'll probably just do a fastman TB w/ intake & exhaust. I'll save my money for really building up my next truck. I'll keep the truck and enjoy it till I get out of school (only about a year and a half). Besides, looks like we might see a HEMI powered dak in the near future. That's worth waiting for!

That is a pretty much true statement--- I am working with F&B on a before/after test with a 2001 V6, 4x2 automatic-- With all of the above items, as well as 1.7 Crower rockers. There will be 3 phases for the build up (intake-TB), (headers-exhaust), and Crower 1.7s--- Each phase will be dyno'd seperately -- Baseline test will be a 'hot lap', as will each phase tested-- to give real numbers (what your truck is putting out, under standard driving conditions in normal temps-- not 45 F (ideal) temps).
I am in contact with a national truck magazine to cover the build up for a possible future article.
From there-- the sky's the limit- :) I have a custom grind cam for the 3.9L out now-- 2 people are running it, or will be shortly (each cam is a little different in spec, to get some different dyno numbers-- one a 5 spd, the other automatic). These are based on 1.7 Crower roller rockers too-- so it'll be nice to get MORE from your investment--- Do rockers now, then add a cam later without having to replace something you already have.

Message: Rtdak; I am very interested in your modifications and having it dyno'ed each step of the way, it certainly takes the subjectiveness out of the feel of the increase. The dyno measurements you make will certainly proof positive to the increase. I have a 97 dak that's a work in progress. I plan to keep up with you're mod's.
