Subject: Cylinder #2 Firing Problems IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1999 3.9 Dakota Sport that is driving me crazy. I've had my truck to the mechanic who ran the codes and found that there is a firing problem on cylinder #2. The fuel injectors were cleaned ($150) and the problem was not fixed. There was also a code indicating a problem with the fuel pump ($575 more spent) and the problem still happens. The plugs were changed about 20,000 miles ago, but not the wires. I've done some research that indicates that a "cross-fire" problem can be happening. The check engine light will go off for about 3 days and then return and stay on for about 3 days and then go off again. The truck is running rough at idle. It (the light) will come on while driving or sometimes will be on when I start the truck. The mechanic is scratching his head (maybe his a** too) and can't figure it out. The wires all produce enough current, per him. Rather than having this guy guess some more at my expense, should the wires be changed or has anybody else had this problem? Thanks for any help, on a tight budget due to divorce. The truck is about all she didn't get.

Message: How were the injectors cleaned? If it was via a machine in the shop (Motorvac or simular) with the injectors still in the truck, then that may not do it. The only real way to get them cleaned and/or fixed is to remove them and send them to an injector service company. For one injector it may be easier just to buy one due to a failure of the injector.
As for the ignition side, if the mechanic has a machine that can verify that it is all working as it is suppose to then the injector is the problem. But you can not always trust the mechanic.

Message: If the plugs have 20k on I'd pull them and check the gap, and if the wires have more than 50k replace them, also did they check the simple things like the Cap & Rotor ???? could be a cam sensor

Message: If the truck is a 99 then I wouldn't think the injectors should need cleaning. I'd change the plug wires and check the plugs.

Message: Do what the other posters recommended. Cheap/easy stuff first. New Cap, rotor, plugs and wires. When they changed the fuel pump, did they do a fuel filter change also? Im not familiar with the 99's. My 92 has the filter on the frame rail. The 99's may be in the tank. Did he check the fuel rail for rust?? It can and does happen. Good luck.
