Any Help would be greatly appreciated !

Problem :
Tried to start truck yesterday..... Ran for 30 sec. then cut off. Would not fire up. Turning over ..just won't start.
Today Truck fires right up.....Runs across town about 10 miles no problems. Backfires and cuts off about 15 miles into trip. Won't Start..... Let sit 5 min. Now truck starts up and I get back home without problem.
This had happened to me 2-3 weeks earlier and I changed fuel filter and everything went fine up until the other day.One day truck is fine ..the next it won't run.
? can the fuel pump go out intermittently
? would not an electrical problem be constant

Please help with Your advice

Water in the fuel line?!?! Injectors dirty?!?! Could be multiple problems.. start with the easy ones first.

Clean your injectors, check the fuel pump, check air filter, how often you change oil?!?!

update :

I think I have Isolated problem to This.........

Put new Fuel pump on today ,however Pump does not pump gas (only sporadically). There is not a fuel pump relay switch on this model. I'm not sure what's next. All wires appear to be connected and tight.
Any suggestions? Thanks

My guess, since I had simular problems would be a bad ground to the fuel pump. Check that first, then if that checks out start checking the power wires, if you need to rewire the pump!

Replaces fuel pump, spark plugs, and wires, oil change. POS Still at the garage. Won't crank over in cold, has a new battery. Fuel getting to carb. but it is cutting out. Takes about 3-5 tries to get it restarted after spit and sputtering. Finally cranks over. RPMS go way high then drop low and stalls out. So what you think could be the headache problems with this dealie.

Sounds like you deffinately have a bad battery ground problem on your block, ussually located right around one of your powersteering bolts... Take this off then clean it good, should elliminate cold cranking problems... Not sure about all of your other problems... BUT, if you've got fuel getting to carb, try replacing your coil, this will show signs of being bad if won't crank good or will die after getting up around warm on some then really hot and under heavy loads on others, just depends...

So ground cabble cleaning and coil replacement and you should be allright.

To check your coil, let get hot, and then when running problem starts, cut off unplug and lay a good inch away, the coil wire going from coil to distributor, then have someone else crank for just few seconds to see if consistant spark is jumping... Only do for few seconds, because can short stuff out this way...

Had similar problems with my 92.

Although it would never quit on me once it was running... I would drive somewhere, turn the truck off, and then come back in short amount of time, would turn over but no fire. Sometimes it would start after 15 minutes, sometimes after an hour. Sometimes over night. Varried.

The problem ended up being the ECM (engine Computer). Went bad. So don't forget to check that. I actually had to replace 2 times, first one I got was bad also.

I have a Dakota that dies when you don't want it to even as we are driving down the road with cruise control on,and for no apparent reason. It has been very sporatic and at various speeds. Some days it runs ok and others it dies several times a day.Coil has been changed, fuel pump, fuel filter battery, Spark plugs, Complete tune up and The Air intake gone over and cleaned by professionals.
Today I thought I had a bad ground wire from the Battery so I replaced it and after I started the truck and went to the fender to listen to the engine( about 10 seconds ) The engine died again.
We are at a huge loss as to what to do next and thought about the computer. This is a Dodge Dakota fuel injection system and 1992.

Any help would be appreciated.

Check your pick-up coil in the distributer. Alot of times it gets hot after a few miles and it will shut power to itself as a saftey measure it will do this for quit a long time until it goes completly out.

I have a 2004 dakota sxt it hesitates between 1500 and 1700 rpm's dealer says it a computor problem, but chrysler has not developed the software to correct it. anybody with this problem please reply. I might add the dealer will not exchanged the truck even though they admit they cannot fix it at this time. They say it is the factory problem not theirs. class action might have to be taken if enought of these trcks have been sold.

I have found my problem with my 91' dakota. It was the auto shutdown relay located on the drivers side fender. It would give signal most of the time, but when it didnt the truck would turn over but not start. After replacing $500 worth of parts it ended up being a $20 relay. Thats my luck though. Oh well glad its fixed now. Its been a headache. Maybe this info will help someone else out.

I'm assuming you mean you're getting very little spark at the end of the plug wires/spark plugs. Are you getting fuel? What is the voltage to the coil? Did you check compression? How about firing order?

Sorry so many questions. I need a little more info.

yes we are getting fuel, compression is excellent, and firing order is right, we did put a voltage regulator on the coil wire and it shows very little juice and when you turn it over there is none.

Disconnect the wires feeding the coil. Check for voltage at the coil feed wires. There should be 12 volts on one of the wires. When checking for voltage use the battery ground, not the chasis. Once you find the 'hot' wire to the coil, do a continuity (ohm/resistance test) test to check the other wire for a ground. Touch one test lead to the wire and the other to the battery ground. There should be about .1 ohms of resistance or less.

If you find no power or no ground trace the wire back to where it's comming from. The coil is grounded by the computer. It's either pin 6 or 9 on the 93 3.9.

Let us know what you find.
