Message: if the battery is a couple years old have it load tested. a weak battery will cause the PCM to lose it's idle setting memory.

Message: I have a 2002 Dakota Quad Cab w 3.9 L V6, with 94000 miles. I want to change the Spark Plugs and Wires, but when I look under the hood there is a metal shield around the spark plugs and caps. Is there a special tool needed to change these plugs? I guess I am too old school, i thought I would just remove the caps, use a spark plug wrench and be done with it. I don't want to risk damaging the cap if it requires a tool for removal. Thank you for your help.

Message: Marc here you go,
It is heat shields you are referring to.

Message: You don't have to remove those heat shields to remove the plugs...your socket will fit down in there. Hint of advice...if you choose to remove them...be careful. Usually you just use a set of vice grips and when you clamp down on them, they release and pop right out...however, I had one that was rusted in so bad it broke off and I barely was able to get it out. Took me HOURS of prying, praying and hammering. Do yourself a favor and don't try to remove them...

Message: I just bought a 90 Dakota with a 3.9. Has about 140,000 on it. It sometimes will hesitate and backfire, but only sometimes. It does seem to happen as the rpm’s climb up. I’ve replaced the cap, rotor and fuel filter. Doesn’t seem to be a fuel problem, but I’m not sure of that. If I remove the cap and spray down the inside of the distributor with WD-40 the problem seems to go away for the day. Could the problem be with the pickup coil? I’ve heard they work or they don’t. They usually don’t cause this kind of problem.

Message: If you only changed the cap and rotor you've only half completed the tune up. Change the plugs and wires.

Message: I have seen a few people saying it will drive when started after sitting or starting the first time then cutting out. I had a similar problem with my 01 dakota and it turned out to be a bad crank positioning sensor.
costs about 150 to have installed for you.
After replacing i have had no problems
