Subject: electrical problem IP: Logged
Message: Driving to work today the truck just stopped running. I checked for spark, found none at the plugs or the coil wire. With the key on, both terminals at the coil were hot. (12 v) It is a 3.9L V6 1988. Can anyone give me an idea of any other tests to perform which might pinpoint the problem?
Thanks
Dave

Message: Actually the ID plate on the inside of the door says 12/86 for the year. I assume this means 87.

Message: You can check the resistance of the coil primary winding (should be 1.34 to 1.55 ohms) and the resistance of the secondary windings. THe secondary resistance spec depends on which coil you have (there were 3 different manufactures used in 87) but should be in the neighborhood of 9K to 15K ohms. I'm willing to be that it's a bad coil, these ignition systems are pretty basic, the coil is all that usually goes bad.
