Subject: 3.9 losing oil pressure

Hi,I have an 88 dakota 4x4 with the 3.9
The problem that I am having is that after i have it running for a bit the oil pressure drops to nothing and I can hear a knocking under one of the valve covers. We checked the pressure with a mechanical gauge on the engine,if I shut it off for a minute and restart it the oil pressure goes back to around 60 psi where it was and the knocking goes away and then repeats this problem. It doesnt happen so fast if its just ideling but when i drive it it happens rather quickly.Could this be a plugged oil screen or faulty pump?I have ran engine flush through it twice now hoping that it may just be a sludge buildup.
I received this truck free and I really love it,its in very nice shape and really solid,I cant wait to start driving it and fixing it up but I need to take care of this first,Any help or opinions is appreciated, thanks

If you pull the pan to clean the screen, go ahead and change the oil pump too. It sounds like a pump going anyway. How many miles on your truck? With any luck this should fix it. Change oil and filter at 1500 miles after the install of the new pump, then do regular oil changes. The early change is to catch any materal in the oil from the repair. Good Luck.

Also I forgot to add,it runs nice and smooth throughout this, even when the oil pressure drops and it starts knocking

It has 153,000 on it.Thanks for the advice,im going to pickup a new screen and pump tonight. It looks like this is going to be a big job to get the oil pan off,it looks like I may be able to undo the motor mounts and lift the engine up a bit and slide the pan down behind the axle.Guess I will find out lol.

Pull your distributor cap off before you raise the motor. Wood blocks work well to support the motor. Good luck.
