Subject: You think you know 3.9's? IP: Logged
Message: Facts: 1996 CC 2wd Dak w/ 3.9 Mag, 2" susp lift and 30 inch tires. No engine mods as of yet.
Problem: Whenver I start my truck, there emits a scratching sound from the engine area (not sure exact location). The sound is almost like a metal fan scraping against it's metal housing, but much too rough. It's not constant, but a pulsing noise. Will continue for the first 5 minutes either driving or idling before slowly disapating. Also will increase when coasting or first hit on gas pedal. No problems while at speeds 15 or more. Definatly not hampering performance as I can tell. But because its such an awful sound, I wanted to ask you guys. If you can help solve this mystery, I will be forever in your debt. Thanks B Fitz

Message: I would guess 1) fan clutch 2) serpentine belt tensioner 3) AC comp. clutch 4) alternator bearings.

Message: Mine does the same thing but it's not real bad yet. I am pretty sure it's the belt tensioner, one of these days i will get around to fixing it.

Message: i would almost bet that it is your dust cover, for your transmission...it is located between the torque converter, and the flywheel...mine got bent one time and made a metal, rubbing sound, i went in between the two, with a small screwdriver, and bent it alittle bit, fixed it...then about a month or so later after some ruff driving, it did the same thing. no biggie

Message: Check the bearings in the water pump.
Mine did the exact same thing a few weeks ago. Would squeal like a pig when i first started it, then would get quiet after it warmed. Would squeal a little during acceleration from stop or revving on highway.
I also believe my fan clutch may have contributed since it still has an occassional noise, though not near as loud. I will be removing that later this week and installing an electric fan.

Message: I have a 97 3.9 and it had a similar problem. Come to find out from the factor they never put a timing chain tensor on. They posted a bullenton, but they wouldn't recall it. It fixed my problem.

Message: I had a similar problem on my truck and it turned out to be the AC clutch making all the noise. Eventually it froze up and had to be replaced. Luckily it was still under warranty and the dealer replaced the whole compressor.

Message: An easy way to check is first remove the serpentine belt. That will eliminate all the accessories. If the noise continues, its most likley the timing chain. If the noise stops, you can then inspect the accessory drives. Don't run the engine too long with the belt off since it drives the water pump.

Message: belt tensioners for our Daks run in the 70 to 80 dollar range at AutoZone. First , put a wrench on it and see if its tight. mine was very stiff and ,freed it up with some PB BLASTER. of course i had the belt off. will still have to be replaced eventually , but it's saved me some money so far. hint- have replaced the water pump and fan clutch too. got wobbly, didn't leak ,but didn't want it coming through the hood. grab the fan blades and move it in and out horizontaly,if there is any play, replace the fan clutch.if the pully wobbles too, replace the water pump. hope this helps....BEACH LIFE AND BOAT DRINKS!!!! Message: Absolutly incredible. It is reasons like this that sites like this exist with such popularity. A mixture of bad weather and my driver side door lower bracket rusting off (fixing that via 16 guage plating and some welding), I haven't driven it much since I posted back on 4/28. I wrote down all of the possibilities and am going to my buddy's house to go over each in detail. I can't express my thanks, but keep up the good work. *The same buddy gave me a set of Lund hood scoops, and I was toying around with the idea of rigging up a ram air set up by cutting open the "fake" scoops and re-tubing the air-intake so it draws directly from these new scoops. Besides making sure water dosen't get in, would this work/ be worth while? Thanks again-Fitz-will report back with the results
