I live in Minnesota. And recently when the temperature is in the single digits my engine will "whistle".
It seems to happen at about 20 mph and 40mph and will stop when I accelerate past those speeds.
Does anyone have any possible solutions or has anyone experienced the same problem?

I have a solution: Take a cab!! hehe
Think of it this way: You too would weeze if put out in single digit degree weather....
No truck is perfect.

I live in Canada and drive in -30C weather i get
a whistle every once in awhile too but after
acclerating a bit then letting it drop back down
it goes away.

Mike, I have that same problem, as well. I was thinking that it might be the serpentine belt slipping in the cold weather. I have a 2001 V6 RC with 2500 miles on it. It does the same thing so far only in cold weather but after a few minutes of driving it goes away. VERY ANNOYING THOUGH!!!!

My 2001 quad started doing it in September. It was only a few times but now that its a bit colder out it's happening more often. It goes away after 25mph.

I agree with the serpentine belt. I put a new one on my truck a 100, 000 km, now only 40,000 later the aftermarket whines or whistles both at warm up and low rpm doesn't seem to be affected by the cold weather but certainly once the motor has run for a while and is warm its fine. I agree with the annoyance though it sucks.

Hey, just found this forum, wish I would have come sooner, nice place! Anyway, My 98'Dakota, V6 auto, also started doing this about a month ago. I live in KC so the cold has been fairly nice this year. I also thought this was normal because it would run like this sometimes when I had the A/C on, but this morning, the whistle got a little worse, truck wouldn't go over 40 mph about 5 minutes after driving. Made it to work and took it into the shop this afternoon and drove fine but no word yet. Oh, engine light did flash about 3 times, twice and then went off. Any ideas? I'll post back if I find out what the problem was, but I'm not much of a mechanic so I don't want to get ripped off....

Got my truck into Firestone for a diagnostic and they said it was the Catalytic Converter. I wasn't sure about that, because it was already my 2nd one. Took it to the Dealer and sure enough, that's what it was! I had one replaced at 30k and 33k later had to replace it again. Luckily it was covered under a 8Yr./80k emissions warranty, but still had to pay for Firestone Diagnostic. Anyone else had this many problems with the Cat Coverter?

I have the same thing in cold weather. Did the dealer replace the cat because it was whistling? Did they say what was causing it to whistle?

Well, sort of, my cat, so I'm told, was completely clogged up which caused the huge powerloss. I was describing the sound like a high pitch vacuuming sound, so if your getting the whistle, I would recommend getting it checked out. Not sure if you saw my above post, but there's an 8yr/80k mile emissions warranty, don't know if thats a State to State thing or not though. The code read told them it was something in the exhaust system that started 107 starts ago, so my problem just worsened over a period of time. Be careful who you take it to though, Firestone Tire's Code reader didn't register anything, but Chrysler's did. Hope this helps, good luck....

Thank you guys for your very informative web site and posts! I was really stressed as I had just learned from my "trusted" mechanic that I needed over $600.00 worth of exaust replacement, ie.. the entire assembly including the catylic converter, pipe from front tire to rear and muffler! Then, when I found your site I learned that the catylic converter is covered under warranty as my 97 Dakota only has 75,650 miles on it! Dealer is going to do the repairs for me tomorrow, and it does not sound like I need the entire enchaldia after all!
What are your opnions on the cause for the blockage that supposedly burned out my converter in the first place? Is my mechanic on the right path by replacing everything at the same time? Dealer will only replace the converter under warranty of course, and the dealer "does not do" mufflers! LOL

That whistle is most likely from the Intake air controller (IAC)... it will open and close at times...Mine whistles too...

your mechanic was ripping you off. The exhaust system on your truck from the back of the exhaust manifold to the tip of the tailpipe is stainless steel. It wont rust out for a very long time. but it will rust out. My 88 Omni has a stainless system on it (factory just like your truck) and so far only the muffler has givin up the ghost. In 201,000 miles.

Yep Dogliftsleg, you speak the truth.... Dodge Dealer replaced my catalytic converter under warranty, rest of the exhaust system checked out OK, lol Dodge service was first class as well, even got me a courtesy ride to work and back! I love Dodge.

Occasionally I have this popping noise from what it sounds like right under the passenger side of the truck. Now last time I went to the dealership they tried to tell me that many parts of my truck couldnt be worked on because I changed the spark plugs to bosch platinuin(nonfactory) and set of 8.5 mm wires. I got pretty pissed off. Now i have 2000 more miles before my warrenty runs out. How do I going about getting my cat checked out for blockage? Also, isnt the cat just held on by a brace instead of welded to the pipes? I have a 2001 RC V6. I have someone who could probably hollow out my cat for free. Would I benifit or lose from this situation?

I took my Dakota in for a loud whistle, belt was glossed over so they replaced that. It whistled on the way home. Then the tech said he heard a grinding noise coming from the power steering pump and replaced that. It kept happening so I waited till it got worse and took the guy for a ride. He heard it finally and, as I suspected, it did no good because he'd never heard such a noise. Then he found that my catalytic converter had a loose element that was causing back pressure. Replaced the Catalytic converter and it stopped...for a month. Did it again during a snow storm. Hasn't done it since. I have a long trip coming this weekend so I took it in just incase they could find something. He said he had a Ram in the other day that had a bad alternator causing the same noise. Now he has an alternator on order. I'll have a new truck soon.

Sounds like the catalytic converter, mine was replaced under the 8yr 80k mile warranty at 77k miles. Solved the whistle and loss of power problem. The dealer didn't have an answer for me as to why the converter went out though, "it just happens" sometimes. However, better mantainence and more frequent oil and filter changes may have helped:o(

hi i live in Saskatchewan Canada and i have a
2002 dakota 3.9 v6 and when its cold below
freezing i get a high pitched whine from
engine bay comes and goes and very
annoying especially bad when cruise is set to
about 105 km. Any help would let me sleep
better at night. Dealer has no ideas yet:(

found under, 2001 Dodge Truck RAM 3500 1 Ton) 19-008-
00 OCT '00 Tie Rod - "High Pitched Whistle Sound Heard
While Driving." It may or not apply to everyone, but it could
for some.
I have the same issue with my Jeep Wrangler - replaced my
cat. last summer.
