Mine does it too. Seems to be vacuum related. Slightly more OR less throttle and it goes away. I hope someone finds a cure. It's about to drive me nuts!

Hmmm, interesting theory's. Belt noise is a popular choice. Bearing or spinning things a close second. Mysterious vacuum leak pulls up in third. Not to mention catalytic converter homage. You gotta love the ice mass in the vent system.

Sounds like "blowing across a .22 shell"? Very clever, how right-on is that? So we've clearly defined it, zeroed in on the years it occurs, drilled down to a precise temperature and have isolated the exact RPM. Great, but not a fix is to be had.

I'm glad it showed up here. On your trucks too! I've spent hours hunting this snipe. It's like... okay now, I'm sharing this pain with my bros. It's not just my stupid truck! HA! Let her blow!

O.K, if the whistle is upon cold start and lasts for awhile until the engine is warmed up some then it is the IAC solenoid leaking past the O-ring in the back of the throttle body. There have been issues with the O-ring not sealing properly over time. It is the opening and closing of the IAC that will vary the pitch of whistle till the engine is warmed up and the o-ring expands. The easy fix is to replace the o-ring and to put a very small bead of permatex Ultra Blue silicone sealant on the o-ring then intall the IAC back in its normal position. You can still get the solenoid off if needed so don't be worried that it is "glued" on forever. I found this out after chasing the whistle for quite some time. As for the whistle at higher speeds, I haven't run across that one yet. Don't pull or push on the IAC plunger either or you will have to buy a new one. Good Luck!

Last time i clean my IAC my O' ring look like its good shape and everytime i've clean always put some silicon spray on it before reinstall it and our noise still........ there?? bludak gave us some good direction we should just replace O ring see if that cures but do they sell the O ring by itself without buying the whole IAC ??

Talking some of mechanics in the field heard some of them say pulleys and maybe harmonic balancer ?? because something in the metal properties?? sounds like sh!t to me but then thinking about for a few i know some metals can change shape and distort and contract, expand, etc...with change of temp. espicially with prononced with when cold ?? but it still does'nt answer to our whistler LOL.... take and mine one of the mechanic had said this to me he's ASE like myself and stumped...

Okey. My names Jak and . . . my truck whistles too. It's on 03 Dakota Quad cab with a 4.7 V8. Sounds like it's right in the cab. When it's warm, no whistle. When it's 35 or lower I'll get the whistle for a few seconds then it'll stop, then come back for a second then quite. At first I thought it was the radio, turned it off, still whistled. Tried playing with the heater fan/controls, no change. Stops when you take your foot off the gas at light acceleration. Now if it were a bearing wouldn't it do it all the time? And it only does it on the first start up of the day or after work.

I check out this sight once in a while. I was suprised to see that this post is still showing up. My truck has had the same whistle since it was new (look back at my posts from 5 years ago). I never found it. I have had the belt and the water pump changed (the pump started leaking last December), it still whistles. I still think it comes from somewhere inside the dash. I have not heard it this year (yet) but it has not been that cold here yet. I'm sure as soon as it gets real cold, the whistle will be back (like an old friend at this point).

My GF's 2003 Dakota V6 exhibits the exact same symtoms. "Blowing across a .22 shell", only at certain engine speeds, only below freezing, doesn't matter if the truck is warmed up or not. Any more votes on the alternator as the culprit? It's driving her completely nuts, and she sez if the whistle doesn't go, the truck does...

My truck is a 2002 Dodge Dakota V6 3.6L.
I was surprised to see more than 5 pages of "whistle" on here. The "blowing on a .22 shell" describes my whistle perfectly. It stops when I let up on the gas. I'll try the blue silicone on the AIC o-ring and see if that stops it. You'd think Chrysler would monitor these pages and post an answer (IF THEY HAVE ONE!)
Is the warranty on the cat conv good even if I'm not the original owner? I'm thinking it is NOT a bearing otherwise sooner or later something will give.

My 01 whistled on very cold days at highway speeds at neutral throttle luckily while still on warranty. The throttle body was replaced which corrected the vacuum leak.

If anyone is still having the whistling problem, here is what fixed mine, just yesterday. First let me explain that mine had a whistle at varying speeds (not a whine, grind or squeel), it would modulate based on rpm (i am assuming the rpm correlated to amount of air going down the intake). It did not matter what gear i was in or speed I was going. It would happen on the side streets as well as the freeway and sounded like "blowing across a .22 shell" (someone elses description from a prior remark explained it perfect)and my first thought was that it was a vacuum leak under the dash. I purchased my dakota (3.9 V6 4X4)truck new in 03 in Ca. The first thing I did was put a K&N filter on it so i would never have to buy another filter. I moved to Mn the next summer and for the next 4 years every winter it would whistle and drive me crazy!!!!! I read this blog and decided to try to fix it using the simplest methods described in some of the posts. The first thing I did was buy an 11.00 stock air filter at my local auto parts store and install it (takes 30 seconds to do) and woola, I have no more whistle. I can't believe that I put up with the whistle for 4 years only to discover that it was caused by the high flow filter. Anyway, there you have it, just take out your high flow filter for the winter and replace it with a stock type one, it was a cheap and rewarding fix.

Ok, I'm still doin' the whistle up here in Northern Ontario (-13 at the moment) and if the fix is as simple as a stock air filter then I'm on it.

I've had this for a few years now myself and although I have learned to regulate my whistle bouts to reduce or accelerate slightly I'm still not wanting to part with my V6 2001 Dakota regardless. Aside from some slight rust on front fender this truck has pulled me through some amazing miles... Don't kill my Dakoti!

seriously? no answers? i just got a great deal on a perfect 2003 3.9 now i think i found out why. iv got the stock air filter so that aint it, so i suppose i will try a high flow filter and see if anything changes. the blowing over a 22 shell is the best description. kudos to whomever thought up that gem
