Subject: Engine Shuts Off IP: Logged
Message: I have a '91 3.9L V6 that shuts off after about 10 minutes of running. It's like all power to the spark plugs is gone. Engine starts up with no problems before and after. I get fault codes of 12 and 55 or it's 3 and 55. I've been told to replace the following:
Crank Position Sensor
Spark Advance
Pick-up Coil in distributer
Any suggestions? I do not know what the codes mean. The fuel pump, spark plugs and cables have been replaced.

Message: I don't think there is a code 3, a code 12 could mean that you have a problem with the computer, or it is loosing a power or ground feed. You might want to take it to a dealer or repair shop, it would be a lot cheaper to have them diagnose it then it would be to keep throwing parts at it.

Message: My 89 Dakota did that dying too.
My mechanic tapped the base of the distributor with a small hammer while it was running and every time he hit it...It missed. Than he said PICK UP COIL ! It worked
Of course this was after I had relpaced the relays, the fuel filter and the fuel pump !!!!!
Live and learn ha?
Good Luck

Message: hey... I thought it was the cam sensor that was added after 92... don't all 'new' type distributors require a crank sensor?...

Message: i have a 94 and it keeps shutting off. I replaced the fuel pump about 6 months ago. The code said the map sensor but that didn't make a difference. I put a fuel pressure gauge on it and it pinned the gauge at 100psi. This sounds high to me. The truck will run fine and then go to crap. It runs fine wide open. Its when i get off the throttle or get back on it. Any ideas appreciated

Message: Check your EGR valve. It may be sticking once the truck is warm. Check the MAP senor vacuum hose. It can cause all kind of codes. Belive me, I just fixed mine.
I've owned my 91 since new and I've probably seen most problems.
