Message: I have 89 dakota as well. My overdrive never worked sense I bought the truck with 192k miles on it. When I through a rod through the old engine and swapped in a new one I picked up from a junkward, my voerdrive works most of the time. However not always. Check all the connections and linkages make sure theyre hooked up. I talked to my shop teacher about this, he worked for chrystler for 9 years, he was saying how the O/D back then (around the year of our truck) never liked to work for long and were netorious for not working.

Message: Forgot to mention, if you do a lot of highway driving and need it, look into just a regular 3speed. it'll have taller gears and ride on the highway nice. Im currently scouting junkyards for a regular 3speed because I dont feel like converting my truck to manual.

Message: Overdrives go out alot on our trucks. It's due mostly to lack of fluid in the overdrive...
I'd bet if you pull your pan down and feel around, You'd feel a whole crapload of shredded metal.
---Kracker
P.S. When I rebuilt mine, many of the gears in my overdrive had NO teeth.

Message: hey guys i had the same problem with mine
what was wrong with mine was the wires leading from the speed sensor were loose, check those, and if they arent connected tightly, all the way from the speed sensor (on the back of transfer case on 4x4s) all the way up to the controller try replacing the speed sensor
and if that dont work then your OD is jsut dead

Message: SuperBee, thanx, Im going to make a note of that and check it out tomorrow. Hopefully I'll find a loose or curroded connection somewhere when I have my truck on jackstands and that'll be the problem. Once again, thanx
