Subject: Do you have to be 21 to get nitrous? IP: Logged
Message: I was just wondering, is there an age limit to get nitrous tanks filled? I am 18 and I am thinking of getting NOS for my V-6er. Can I get the bottles filled, or do I have to be 21? Hopefully I don't have to wait :-)

It will be hard, but I will keep my finger off that trigger. What kinda system do you recommend, NX, NOS? I heard NX is better for mopar, what do you think?

Message: ok a few things here...... NO you do not have to be any specific age to buy nitrous oxide, the nitrous they sell for cars is not the same as the stuff you get at the dentist, you cannot breathe car nitrous it WILL KILL YOU.. there are 2 different grades of nitrous 1 is usp nitrous which is medical grade and you cannot purchase that you need a license for it #2 is automotive nitrous or nitrous plus, this contains sulfur dioxide which is what allows it to be sold to the public because you cannot breathe it, sulfur dioxide when mixed with water becomes sulfuric acid sooooooo... what is your body 80% made up of....hhhhmmm i would say water. Ok another thing,,, you should never trigger a nitrous system from a button this can be a certain unquestionable death to your motor.. wanna know why???? it's simple you should only trigger the system with a microswitch that is mounted on the throttle so that the system can only be activated at WOT reason being that at WOT the engines parameters are more apt to undertaking the use of NOS, if you use nitrous at part throttle it can cause the motor to detonate because you do not have enough fuel and conditions in the fuel management are not set for ultimate performance for the engine to compensate for all that extra air flow. Part throttle settings cause the computer to be in closed loop injection mode this is for gas mileage and good driveability under cruise conditions, at wide open throttle you are under open loop fuel injection mode which is your balls to the wall mode and the engine is fully open and able to except that amount of additional air flow plus your injecting way more fuel at wide open throttle too.... you should also never hit full throttle under 3000 rpm while using nitrous this is a same case scenario you can cause pinging and detonation.... NEVER EVER HIT YOUR REV LIMITER while injecting nitrous unless you feel like buying a new exhaust system... if your engine pingings at all on nitrous back out immediately and try jetting down, you should always start small and work up and if you can try using a slightly richer fuel jet while testing the system and work your way down to the right jet ( providing it doesn't ping).... I see Too many people who watched the fast and the furious who think that if you hit a button at any speed it's like bang there's the nitrous and the hit becomes more potent as you go but that's not how it works.. if you jet for 50 hp you get 50 hp when you hit it, that 50 hp is what you get all the way through it doesn't increase it will only decrease if any thing. SO if you hit 50 hp at 1/2 throttle the hit is not going to increase as you get into it it's still going to be 50 hp no matter what... so just imagine your engine at 1/2 throttle cruise and then BANG all of a sudden you dump 50 hp on top of it, mister 3.9 will not like you very much at all..... nitrous is much hp when needed but it's also smart hp so use it smartly and you'll never have a problem. WOT is ideal conditions for nitrous use don't let anyone tell you differently cause they are wrong, your engine cannot take in that much flow at a lesser throttle position... so do what ever you want with your NOS system but if you blow it up using it when you shouldn't it's your own fault.

Message: Thanks Jay, information noted. Do you know of any book that explain this in detail? I want to learn all I can before installing and firing it. Also, do you know where the jets go on the engine w/ the nx kit? On the TB or the intake manifold. Thanks Jay...

As long as you follow the instructions and jetting from the manufacturer and don't use it below 2500rpm, you'll be fine.
I ran the NX 100HP shot on my V6 for almost a year without any problems...now, the blower and a 35HP shot are working just as good and the engine has 60K miles on it (cylinder compression readings are still within 1-2% of each other).
Change your oil more often with Nitrous (especially 100HP+ shots), run a 180 degree T'Stat, one heat range colder on the plugs (gap them .003" - .005" smaller), and Super unleaded preferred to help control detonation (if it exists).

Message: good call bernd almost forgot about that colder plug deal and the 180 t-stat wouldn't hurt either, cause we all know with more combustion comes more heat which in turn leads to detonation.
You can use nitrous all the time if you'd like without really any negative effects on an engine as long as all components are functioning properly and the engine has good head gasket sealing and good rings. Do a good tune up on it first if you have not done so already, use the autolite 3923 plugs a 180 t-stat ( like bernd said), follow the manual's instructions on proper operation and you should have years of worry free enjoyment out of your NX kit.... i would suggest getting the whole NX genX kit though and not the standard NX efi kit because it comes with a bottle heater, fuel safety cut-off, the necessary gauges, and other litte things that you should have with your NX kit.... Beaware though that the genX kit is a bit more expensive but it is worth it in the long run because if you were to buy these things separately it would cost you twice as much. To answer your ? though, the jets for fuel and nitrous go into the fogger nozzle that is tapped into your intake tube. Food for thought .... the closer the fogger is to the TB the harder the system hits, so if you want to keep your engine a little more on the safe side or to make the hit not so harsh try installing the fogger a bit further back on the intake tube plus this will also allow the nitrous and fuel mixture to atomize a sight bit better too. NX usually recommends installing the fogger between 6 and 12 inches from the TB, the NX system i had on my neon had the fogger installed 5 inches from the TB and i never had atomization problems or fuel puddling in the intake..... hey bernd ever thought about a direct port system on a 3.9l dakota before i'd be willing to try it to see what happens...

Message: Thanks again guys. I have a modified intake, the 3923s, v8 stock throttle body and i am gonna install the 180 tstat when i get a chance. Thanks for all the help! Would you guys say the NX kit is a dyi? I am pretty proficient in engine work, and I am not afraid to get up to my elbows in the engine :-) Also, do you know anywhere that would hand polish the TB of mine? And how hard are traction bars to install? Thanks again for all the help...

Message: ok first off.... your not gonna be going to full throttle on nitrous because you will hit the nitrous once the throttle hits WOT because that is when the throttle lever will hit the microswitch. Most nitrous kits supply a microwswitch which is mounted on the throttle so when you reach full throttle the arm comes in contact with the switch and activates the nitrous system ( read my above posts on this matter )... when you hit 2500 rpm and stuff it to the boards you will feel a definite kick in the nut sack you'll probably light the tires if your in a low enough gear... the truck is gonna pull very hard as compared to normal so pay attention to how the truck acts because with nitrous you'll never know what it's goin to do till you actually hit it and you won't know how the truck will act till you hit the shot for the first time...
be safe

you dont even have to be 18 here....
reason there is no age requirement is because you cannot "huff" race grade nitrous oxide. There are warnings all over nitrous bottles about it. Nitrous oxide for race use has sulfur added to it to keep you from huffing it. If you do, the sulfur will burn your lungs and you get to make a nice trip to the hospital.
