Subject: grinding ,slamed tranny question IP: Logged
Message: 2 summers a go I had my tranny worked on(dealer). it was the senseor inside shorting out. at that time it was fixed and they said every thing looked fine. 8000 miles later, the tranny taking longer to shift agin like last problem but today you can hear trany making grinding noise and some time a howling noise at 35mph or faster.and today putting alone in slow traffic I felt slamed like rear ended or breaking an axle, but I realised the trany just shifted. this happened twice. is this normal going out sounds? I have had tranys slip but nothing like this! I hate to be going down the road at 70mph and it lock up like into park, could that happen? dont want to wreak.

Message: Check your fluid levels... Otherwise you might want to think about an overhaul with 142,000 on the clock.
Overdrives go out easily on these trucks...

Message: You don't have to worry about it going into park when your driving, that won't happen. Grinding in an automatic tranny isn't good. The only thing that can make a grinding noise are the planetary gear sets, and those are really expensive, it's usually easier to buy a remanned tranny. You might want to have a mechanic check it out though to make sure it is coming from in the tranny. Could be something like a cracked flex plate, which would be cheaper than a tranny.

Message: Did you guys actually realize how much labor charges are for transmission work?
My A500 Tranny went out, i mean it was bad... I rebuilt the transmission myself, and only put $210 into it, That Includes new planetary sets, new seals, clutch plates and all that stuff necessary when doing an overhaul. $210 is because some parts i already had, otherwise i would have run up to about $400. Anyways, An overhaul on the dakota transmissions will run you $2300 and upwards... if you find it lower, id be surprised. I learned all that from my cousin, who owns a tranny shop, thats why ive done it so cheap, but considering the price, like Jon said, a remanufactured tranny might be worth it.

Message: Exactly, i don't know how tranny shops stay in business with their prices. I called a tranny shop a couple years ago and asked them how much to rebuild my Ford E40D if i took the tranny out myself and brought it to them. They wanted $4200 for labor!! Since then i learned how to rebuild auto trannies mayself and i can put together a full race transmission in a weekend for about $500.
