Message: I was driving my truck yeasterday. Stoped to unload something and shut my truck off. Now it won't start. Had problems like this before and cleaned my connections and it would start right up. Tried this time and it will not start. Even tried to jump it. Took for ever but once it started it would die if I tried to idle it. Then it would not start again. I'm going to try a new battery today but if that doesn't work, anyone have any appinion?? Thanks

Why won't it start? Fire, Fuel, or air? Gotta be one of the three and most likely either fire or fuel. Find out which one is not happening and it'll help narrow down the possibilities!

Message: Hey bud. To determine what type of problem it is start by checking your plugs. Pull out a spark plug and test it for spark, (hold onto the rubber bootie on the wire, not the wire itself and touch the metal end of the plug to a steel surface. Have soemone try to start the truck. If you see a spark then your cap/rotor, wire and plug are basically doing their job, Repeat this with each plug. Do not move your hand when holding the plug until the guy behind the wheel has completely turned off the ignition.)
Fuel System, first check your fuses. They should be located right under your break handle, if your missing the plastic pulling tool just be gentle and use a pair of pliers. When you look at your fuses their should be a white wire connecting both metal tabs. If the wire in the middle of the fuse looks jacked, you have a bad fuse. If the vehicle turns over, but does not start it can be the fuel system. Take off your gas cap, turn the ignition on (all of the way right before it cranks) and put your ear to the gas tank filler opening. You should hear a "buzz" or a "whirling". If you can't hear it slide under your truck and listen as carefully as you can. If your fuel pump is located directly under your alternator, (some are) check there. A fuel pump makes a noise when it works. If you hear nothing right that down. This could be your problem.
Fuel filters don't get clogged up as often as people think. Most people change them because it is smart trouble shooting. It costs $11 compared to a fuel pump that costs anywheres over $152. Change it if you wish.
Catalytic converter. If you charcoal cannister is clogged, if all of your cyclinders are not firing you will be forcing fuel through your exhaust system. Fuel is ment to be burned before it enters the cat so if it is not getting burned you will clog up your converter. If your truck turns over when trying to fire have someone stand next to your tail pipe. If they feel pressure blowing their hand off or at least sputtering out of the tail pipe your cat is good.
A dead battery is obvious, you turn the key and nothing happens. You're voltage meter wont tell you jack if your batter is dead. You have to have power for that to work. Most people don't know this. If you have recently (within a couple of years) replaced your battery then there is another problem. Alternator would be the first guess. If you swap that out, make sure you turn the old one in. They will buy it from you for the core.
Have you recently added a stereo system? You may be drawing way too much power from your battery. Always read the manufacturers recommendations when installing stereo equipment or any highbrid lighting system.
Let me know what happens. I am a jet mechanic in the Air Force and I own a 94 Dodge Dakota Sport that quit on me three days ago.

Message: mike does the engine turn over? why i ask is because you stated you had to jump it and you,ve had this problem before, and you cleaned the connections and this worked.then you said you got it started and it stalled.i,m a little confused.let me take this one step at a time.
first-if the engine don,t turn over, check and clean all connections-battery,starter have battery load tested[cheaper then new battery, most parts stores free]
second-if the engine turns over fine but won,t start, try this pull one plug wire off plug take a old plug or buy one new one and connect this plug to the plug wire that was just removed, put the plug to ground valve cover, intake etc somewhere you can see it from inside truck, turn engine over while watching plug to see if it fires,if you see it fire then its a good chance the rest are firing,if not check coil pull the coil wire from the dist cap and have some one help you, hold the wire close to ground and turn engine over to see if it fires [if it does, bad cap, rotor button, dist modgule-one or all] if it don,t fire bad coil
three-if all above are present,it turns over fine and you,ve got fire, then its fuel, with some one to help, one of you need to get back by the gas tank and listen closely for a humming sound as the other person turns the key to the on position only[you should hear this humming for 2-5 seconds]if unsure repeat this[if you can,t hear humming your pump needs replacing]if you hear humming check to see if have fuel pressure at the fuel rail[there should be a valve that looks something like a tire valve stem on the fuel rail]find this and press the valve in to see if theres good pressure[keep face away from it,because of gas getting in eyes]low pessure -bad pump or pressure regulator.
sorry about being so long winded.just a few things you can check without costing you.
good luck.

Message: Thanks guys. I pulled my batt. connections off and cleaned them real good. It started right up with no problem. I think it might be time for a new batt. I did have a new stereo system put in a few months ago. I keep getting alot of corrosion around my connections though. Well thanks all, good information.
