Subject: Engine Knock IP: Logged
Message: I tuneup my 2000 dakota about 3 weeks ago and now the engine knock is gone when I hammer down on the thottle (65k). My owners manual says to put 87 octane in the truck but about 50k I started putting 89 in it and knock clamed down a little but the knock was still there.
Okay, when I got the old spark plugs out they were all pretty much gapped at .055 and the truck calls for .040 gap. I switched back to 87 octane and no knock.
My question is would a longer gap cause an engine to knock since the current has to go to a further distance than it suggested?

Message: I don't think an incorrect gap can cause spark knock, just misfire if it was too wide. Spark knock is caused by 2 different flame fronts colliding, for example your spark plug sparks and ignites the air fuel mixture near the plug, at the same time a hot piece of carbon somewhere else in the combustion chamber ignites the air fuel mixture. When those 2 explosions collide with each other you get a knocking noise. It works just like a warm front and a cold front come together and make thunder and lightning.
It's usually caused by a lean air fuel mixture, carbon buildup or too low octane gas. Maybe the 87 octane you were buying was bad and had been sitting around for awhile, i bet if you switched gas stations it would go away.
