Subject: Which Exhaust IP: Logged
Message: I realize questions of this type have been asked before but I can't find all of the answers that I'm looking for even after exhaustive searching. I want to decide what type of exhaust set-up I should get for my 2002 V6 Club Cab. I want something with a good, deep sound (I realize it won't be fantastic), but added performance is also desired. I realize that I will lose some low-end torque but I want to keep as much as possible with still getting some top-end and a healthy sound. I am willing to spend some money but not too much. Should I disregard torque and switch to 3.92 gears from 3.55 and also get a freer-flowing exhaust? If I just get a muffler to keep the torque and sound, will my top-end horsepower be any better? I already have a K&N drop-in. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Message: I have a 2002 SXT Club Cab 4x4 with the v6. After much research I went with the Dynomax #17748 muffler and left all stock pipes. It is as quiet as stock at first, then it loudens a bit after a couple thousand miles but it is a nice low, mellow tone.
In order to get a throatier mellow tone you need to get something like a 40 series flowmaster...but beware, they sound great at cruising and idle, a nice loud rumble, but then gets high pitched and ricey sounding in the higher rpms. I really do suggest you go the performance route with the Dynomax and keep it a little quieter, but still have a nice acceleration/cruise/idle tone.
I have the Stage II Intense Performance intake, Autolite 3923 platinum plugs (AP3923), and the Dynomax #17748 muffler...those combined greatly increased the performance of the truck. I have no complaints. I also plan to add a fastman or f&b throttle body soon.
Hope this helps some. If you want to go over some finer points, just email me....emiller426@hotmail.com

Message: I forgot to note that I do have the 3.92 gears as well. Switching to those will give you a little more off the line, so I have heard. I can't honestly say because I have not driven a Dakota with the 3.55s for an extended period of time.

Message: Thanks a lot Ernie. I appreciate the help and the knowledge. It's always best to hear from someone who already owns it. I was leaning toward Gibson, then I read some of the posts here and it sounds like it is a bad match with the six-cylinder. So then I started checking other posts out and now I am really liking the dynomax. Thanks again.
To everyone: I would also like to know about the Borla mufflers if anybody has one of those with the V6. Thanks in advance.

Message: No problem!
About the Gibson, my buddy who is the assistant service manager at my local dealer, told me a lot of people are satisfied with Gibson when I asked him about exhausts. Supposedly the Gibson keeps the tone mellow as well.
If you have any other questions down the road, shoot me an email.
Take care.
