Message: Well, I'm 14 years old. I have a 1991 Dakota 4X4 with a 3.9, So I know what your talking about, and I also realize what kind of tight budget your on, because I am too... But of course, more power does mean more money, and the things that would give the biggest boost in horses cost more than IM willing to spend on my high mileaged truck. I don't know your budget, but maybe some better plugs and wires, a kn filter, and things like that will help some.
Sorry I can't be of more help, but there actually isn't many cheap mods for our trucks, but then my idea of cheap mught be different than yours. Anyway, What I'm gonna do is take it up to Accurate Engines, they gave me a qutoe of $2300 to install a rebuilt 318 V8. Even though I could do the work myself and save money, like I'm doing with the transmission now, I figured $2300 isnt a bad price...
Good Luck

Message: Put 2 more cylinders on it and call it a 318. I'm just messing with you. You guys are makeing me feel old an I'm only 19. Get a K&N drop in or intake of some sort. I get a breather, 18.00$ and it gave my truck some pep. Than get exhaust and you should be good.

Message: Ya, 00dak is right, those mods will help the most for your money, and budget.
My cousin owns an auto shop, and I go over there alot, so I get alot of things done dirt cheap, the only thing he said is that I have to help do the work... hehe. Anyway, I'm goin back up there in a half hour, I'm gonna finish where I left off rebuilding the tranny. But afterwards, I'm gonna ride down to Auto Barn and pick up the flowmaster 40 I need, and were gonna go back up to the shop, bend up some pipes and start welding... plus, I'm gettin rid of the cat... It should sound pretty good.

Message: i have an 88 too, just go to mopar performance and get anything for a 318, except for things such as intake, cam, and other manifolds, but other than that they are the same, you just need 12 pushrods instead of 16, right now im making a roller rocker kit for mine from the service parts mopar sells

Message: WOW!!! I thought I was the only one with a pre-1992 dakota! I own a 1990 Dakota with the 3.9, I'm 17 and have been trying to find parts for mine for the past 2 years and have came up with almost nothing. I guess I don't NEED that much power but it's nice to have, mines not very fast at all but it'll powerbrake pretty good!!! I guess its good to know that there are still some of these trucks around and there are people trying to customize them and build them up besides me. After all they are a good truck the Dakotas wouldn't be were they are today if it wasnt for the 1st gen daks!

Message: 14? 15? 17? 19? Holy cow, I've ownered my truck longer than some of you have been alive. I bought mine in Dec of 87. The power was the only complaint I've ever have about the truck. But except for a KN filter I never did anything about it until I went to the Mopars at Carlisle and found a B&M blower for it. Other things are coming but it takes time and it's the same problem at my age as with your age MONEY. Just think of it this way If you make 125 horses and you get 10 or 12 more thats a 10 percent gain. If your making 400 horses and make an extra 10 or 12 horses it's only 2 percent gain. Doesn't hurt as bad when I think of it that way. One more thing the truck was doing mid 19's stock and the best so far with the blower is 16.9, that's with a 118K on the stock motor and trans with 2.94 gears.

Message: I own a 93 Dakota-I found that putting an aftermarket exhaust system on your truck not only makes it sound good, but uncorks power. I ended up finding a chip for mine, and at the local shop's dyno it rated @255hp. I know how you feel, I had a ranger with a steeda thunderchicken motor in it.

It's cool to see so many young people here talking about their trucks!
zaccatrtck,
255rwhp, is this a v6? I think I see a BS flag coming out of the pocket, unless you have some serious mods, b/s the exhaust!

Message: yeah, i was shocked when I looked at the reading, of course I probably forgot to mention the shift kit, you should know that your dakota comes stock from the factory with 175hp already. All I did was add a different computer chip/ thermostat, shift kit, exhaust and timing gear.

Message: Hey this topic seems to be chock full of young guys so i might as well add to it, I'm 19 and i got a 94 with 40k on the clock. Anyway does anyone know what dodge did to decrease the Magnum 6 from 180hp to 175 for the 94 year? Right now I've got the Autolite plugs and im building an intake for it should have that done by Friday when I take it to the track, im gonna run it without the plugs and intake and then do the swap and see what happens. In the plans are exhaust (if i can find someone to do it cheap) Throttle body, ignition system, and nitrous. If you cant find it-make it. All the tried and true hotrod tricks work on any motor. Just because you cant find an Intake to buy for $200 doesnt mean you cant free it up for $50.

Message: parts4mymopar .com has some parts for the 3.9ls up to 91 your best bet on actually getting decent hp out of this motor is (by my theroy) to take it out rebuild it using 318 parts pistons connecting rods rings and rig up a blower set up if you have the money for one what u do is get a blower like a weilend. that comes with a intake manifold and it will bolt up to your intake thn since it has 2 extra ports you block them off just like the premags with tbi block off the fuel pump thingy on the timing cover. its worked for me so far but i had some of my instuctors (hot rod University) help with the fabricating. the dyno reads 341 befor the nitous kicks in after that im at 416hp@4600rpms but im in the prosses of getting it to be streetlegal. so i can take out any thing that comes along. HEHEHE 18y.o. 90 dodge dakota convertible #4 of 1039 made im thinknking about a viper crate any one want my motor for 12K it only has 75 miles All on dyno. opps kinda got off subject there.

Message: Just a tip. If you own a 93 or newer Dakota, the best cheap headers to get for more power are the stock headers off of the 92 Dakota. If you don't believe me check out this link:
www.sporttruck.com/techarticles/1411/index.html
They have a few good tips that are fairly cheap and good for a performace boost.

Message: The SC doesn't stand for South Carolina. B&M made a blower kit for the 3.9 in the late 80's. It's only 95 cid but how much do you need for a 239 cid motor. I got mine at the Mopars at Carlisle about 3 years ago and paid 775 for it, new in the box. Had to modify the ignition, fuel system and a few other things to get it, and the truck, to work right. Like I said I have 92 van manifolds and a factory magnum Y pipe with a 3 inch cat with a Dyno max Cat back system. Every now and then a blower comes up on eBay, so if you want one start looking. In the next month or so it's getting a 8 3/4 rear from a E body (Barracuda) and also putting a 600 Holley on it, I don't think it likes the 390 that's on it now. Maybe later on if a O/D comes up I'll put a set of 3.91 in the rear and that should liven it up a bit. Any way got any questions ask away.
