Subject: CB Wiring IP: Logged
Message: Ok, don't make too much fun of me here.
I have a CB that I want to install in my Dakota. I JUST learned that the wire has a fuse built into it so I won't have to go through the fuse box...right?
If that's the case how should I get power to the thing? Somehow from the battery directly?
Thanks for any help

Message: Thanks for the advice and so quick too.
Now with the Lighter idea how do I know which wire is + and which is -?
Or If I go with the battery. Would I go right to the actual battery cables or is there a place to get the power from?
I have no realy experience with electrical work so it freaks me out a little.
Again thanks

Message: cigarette lighter
red is pos and black is neg, it's teh easiest spot to connect, plus unlike the direct connection to the battery, you don't have to worry about accidentally leaving it on and killing the car battery. cigarette lighter only has power when the key is in the ACC or the ON position

Message: get one with a magnet mount and make sure you get your SWR tuned. mount to the roof since this is the highest point on your vehicle.

Message: For the wireing.....just try it hooked up both ways the the lighter, one way will work and the other shouldnt. It wont hurt anything because they both run on fuses.

Message: Yeah I got the magnet mount type on my roof.
But as it turns out my CB must be shot.
All the lights come on and everything but my SWR meter doesn't register anything and the thing makes no sounds at all...
I don't know whats up with that...

Message: Using the cigarette lighter is an okay method, just be very careful to ensure all connections are tight and insulated - potential fire hazard if not. Best method is to route back to fuse panel and use a blank connector.
Location of antenna - best omnidirectional location is on roof. Placed in front or behind cab causes directional reception.
Many CB's will not test or function properly without mike attached. (was yours when you posted no sound, but all lights come on?)
SWR is possible to test out at 0, but that would mean that you managed to achieve an exact perfect match between cable length, CB unit and antenna coil and whip. Be sure to test SWR at ch1, ch20 and ch40 and adjust to best ave. reading or else adjusting at one channel may still leave SWR high enough to do damage on another channel.
Also high SWR can detrimentally effect spark and ignition and also the radio especially near 108MHz.
Sorry for long post, but tried to answer all parts of the above posted questions. Let me know if more info is needed... Done many installs in many vehicles....

Have you ever installed a CB in a Corvette? I'm having terrible ignition noise in my 94. I have a Cobra Hand-held unit and use either a Firefly whip attached to the metal frame underneath the rear bumper using a metal bracket or a magnetic mount sitting in the back behind the seat on the metal seat frame. The one behind the seat is probably not grounded. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Message: Thanks for the ideas.
I have a Cobra 29NWST that was made in '99.
I do have my mic on there and I tried to calibrate the SWR at 1,20 and 40 but still nothing. I Adjusted the antenna length at the base and that did nothing. The needle doesn't move at all and the radio makes no sound whatsoever. Maybe this is the reason why my buddy got it at a gargae sale for a buck.
Too good to be true??

Message: The best way to hook up ur CB is to the battery directly. That is the best way for a few reasons. first it's a source of good clean power. If u go though the cigarette lighter u may get some engin noise. or alternaor wine on ur signal. Or even on Recieve. I am a Ham radio operator and i had to hook up my radio directly through the battery cuz my radio draws 11a at high power. SO i had to directly wire it. You should have a fuse on the Positive and negative side of the battery. I placed ring termanals at the end of each wires. I hooked my wires not directly onto the battery but to where the wires touch the chassy. The negative ground loop terminal in the right front corner of ur truck. and the postive i hooked up under the fuze cover next to the battery. just follow the leads. thats the easy'est way to hook it up. In order to get the wires through the firewall i just used a small stiff wire and pushed it from the inside of the car into the engin compartment. there is a small rubber opening where all the main wires come through the firewall. follow that. If u look under ur dash it's all the way up in the upper right hand corner.. You should see a rubber gromet like thing that all the wires pass though. U need to get your stiff wire carefully through there it's a tight fit put i fit two big 12 gauge wires through that hole. If u need pictures of my setup or how i ran the wires send me an e-mail and ill be happy to help. link under name

If you are using a handheld you will get lots of engine noise no matter what you do. Those aren't really made to be used in a car. You need to get a good mobile unit which is manufactured with built in filters to get rid of some of that RF energy that's causing you so many headaches.

Message: Well You dont have to put it on the negative side if u dont want to but. I know all my gear that i get has it on both pos. and negative wires. plus in my Licencing manual it has it on both lines. Just a saftey in case the wire rubbs through or something and a positive wire hits the negative wire. Or if some dummy decides to touch the positive and negative connectors together. it's only like a few bucks to take the extra precaution. But if u dont want to then u dont have to.
