Subject: 3.9 magnum backfiring IP: Logged
Message: I have a 94 3.9 magnum, 5 spd, and it backfires when I downshift. I don't know why and the only things that I can think of are that I cut out the catalitic converter or bad cap and rotor, or maybe timing chain though it was changed 80 000 km ago. If someone could lemme know why this does what it does it would be much appreciated.

Message: My advice is take it to a reputable mechanic that knows something about Dodges, that you trust.
Mine was doing the same thing, I took it to this creep and got the shaft instead. Now I have to replace the engine at a cost of around $2000. Have it checked out, it could be something major and then again it could be something simple. Mine just happened to be major.

Message: Quick fyi: I think they all do it, The V-6 is an odd fire engine and I think the PCM leans the fuel curve on deceleration and without a cat to help deaden the sound, everyone thinks you lost a cylinder or something. I don't think there is an easy or cheap fix, hi flo cat?

Message: My '95 3.9 started backfiring occasionally on compression after I installed a new cat (OEM) and 40 Series FlowMaster muffler. Hasn't seemed to be a big deal the last year, and it's kinda fun in town!

Message: the V6 is not an oddfire engine, the crank has offset journals that allow it to even fire. Doubt me? take a look at the distributor cap. the contacts are even spaced, inside and out.The rough idle is due to an imbalance in the engine that mopar can't fix with counter-rotating balace shafts like they use on some other engines due to not enough room in the block.
