Message: I had a '97 v-6 reg cab with automatic and it had a vibration between 42 mph and 54 mph they replace the rear end the driveshaft, and rebuilt the transmission twice. They gave up trying to fix it and I swapped it for a '98 ext cab v-6 and have had no problems with it. I did notice that it has an aluminum drive shaft with a cast iron damper and the '97 had a regular steel shaft. I have always wondered how it could have been fixed. I sill suspect that the problem was in the overdrive usit but who knows.

Message: I've got a vibration problem that seems more pronounced when I hit the brake, so my first thoughts are the rotors being warped...however, since I just bought the truck literally today, I'm going to check the tie rod ends for play. Also, another place to check is the idler arm and the pitman arm. You'll need someone to help check these. They should rotate only, if they move the slightest, replace them. I had that problem on my van where I got a horrible shimmy from a bad idler arm, which went out on me again due to the lower ball joint on that side being worn.
You can eliminated certain things due to speed if its that low by keeping the truck in a lower gear and running it up to the speed it starts to vibrate at and see if a lower gear removes or enhances the vibration ( as long as you aren't over revving the engine )
Remember the golden rule of auto mechanics. KISS.
Keep It Simple, Stupid.
