Subject: Swapping V8 for a V6 IP: Logged
Message: What is the cost of purchasing a V8 engine for a dakota and about how long does it take to swap a V8 in place of a V6? Also, about how much does it cost total to switch the engines(such as new wiring, different parts)?

Message: Sorry you didn't get any help guys. Probably because this site is well on its way down the crapper thanks to all the juvenile posts that are taking over. Too bad - this was once a great site.
I can answer a couple of your questions. A V8 will probably cost you $800-$1200 depending on mileage and how complete it is. Try to get one with the wiring harness. Your V6 accessories will swap over. You will need a new pcm, unless one came with the new motor. Try to get the same year as your truck so that all gauges and sensors will work. Depending on how you use your truck, the 42RE tranny will hold up, but it's better to swap up to the V8 one. You'll also need a new throttle body cable. I bought a set of R/T coils to help support the added weight of the heavier motor and a new 3:92 rear end.
As far as how much does it cost? Well, it depends on how much of a rebuild you want to do. I put an M1 2bbl, 52mm Fastman TB, KRC cam, mopar performance valve covers and air cleaner on mine so far. It's a good idea to replace the water pump (no way do you want to do that while it's in the truck, its a PITA) and timing chain (I got a double roller comp cam, don't want to ever do that again either). You could replace pistons and heads and even the crank if you wanted. I bought a lot of stuff used (mopar pcm, torque converter, M1) so I saved money that way.
97 3.9 CC Sport. JBA stainless headers, Borla Turbo XL stainless muffler & tip, 17 x10 Boyd Coddington Smoothies, FMS injectors, V8 TB, Quick D intake, Have, but not installed: 5.9 litre 360, posi and 3.92s, M1, 52mm billet TB, ceramic JBAs. , KRC cam, mopar perf valve covers & air cleaner

Message: Now let me challenge your thinking some Lesley, is it possible to put a V-8 in a 1987 Dakota, Someone told me there is quite a bit a difference in the amount of room my 87 has under the hood versus what would be required for v-8. Also which would be better a V-8 or a later model V-6 magnum?
Any help would be of great appreciation because even though my old engine is running pretty good right now it seems to be getting a lot more susceptible to major problems.
Thanks,
Tim H.

Message: Ok, heres the deal. A V-8 will work ONLY IF your dak is 2WD. The v8's wont fit in GEN1 4wd's due to transfer case positioning, or something, maybe the front driveshaft?... anyway, if its 2wd your in luck. Now, no mater what, if your putting money in it, go with a V-8... all the sixers are might underpowered in alot of peoples opinions... so.. good luck

Message: Thanks, Kracker, it's a 87 4x4 swb so probably have to go with the Magnum V-6. It's been a good old truck but now I am lookin at refurb and modification and on the 87's they used a lot of parts off the standard Dodge's of that year, ie. starter, carb instead of FI, etc., etc.. Anyway just lookin at some of my options.
Thanks,

Message: Sup, just wanted to let you know that Kacker is right about the 2wd daks, there are in fact several kits to swap a v8 in a 87 Dakota, that was an option that I looked into, but I decided to go with a Magnum V6 instead. To do this you will need a complete wiring harness, and PCM. Your drive train should bolt right up to the magnum with no problems. Like Kracker said if you are going to spend the money do a v8, or go all out with a v6 like me and have fun laughing at the v8 when you kick ther azzes all over town.

Message: 1=the v-8 will fit,the 3.9s are a 5.2 without 2cyl.
2=you,ll need a v-8 pcm,3=make motor mounts [or buy them at engine swap.com,about $400 i think] 4=intake and dist from 1988-91 318/360 [for pre tbi engines] 5=the v-6 tb will work just fine. 6=you,ll need balance weight kit from mopar performance [for torque converter if you use a 360 because there cast crank and ext balanced] 318s are int balanced like the v-6s 7=exh manifolds or headers [92-96 headers 5.2/5.9 will work] 8=this works in 2or4x4s 9=time 3 days to a week once you have all the parts together 10=depending on what you buy [new or used parts]$500-3000
good luck
