Subject: Water Pump/Fan Clutch removal problem...
IP: Logged

Message:
Between the fan and the water pump is a nut I have to loosen to remove the fan so that I can get to the water pump. The problem is the pulley on the front of the water pump. I can't get it to stop moving when I try to loosen the nut. I've tried a variety of things, but obviously to no avail. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

I used a rubber strap wrench from Sears to hold the pulley, then I whacked the wrench with a hammer to break it free. It took 3 or 4 good hits to get it loose. You can also use an old serpentine belt or an old leather belt to try to hold the pulley.

I have heard that some people were able to just whack the wrench without holding the pulley, and it came loose. I guess it will depend somewhat on how long the fan has been on there.

Thats all the ideas I have.

I'm gonna run to Sears to pick one of those up. Tried using an old serpentine belt, but that didn't hold well. Using a large screwdriver with rubberbands wound tightly around the head held it well...until the back of the pully cut the rubberbands off. Heh, ghetto engineering...Sears is an hour away. :(
