Subject: V8 TB start problems
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey everyone,

I swapped for a V8 TB last fall. For the most part everthing has been fine, but once or twice a week I have problems starting. The motor starts and immediately dies. The only way to keep it running is to keep my foot on the gas. I'll have to do this and keep the other foot on the brake to keep it going until I head up the road, once it goes through the gears it's fine. I've found no pattern to it at all, most times it starts fine, but the times when it doesn't are getting frustrating.

Anyone have any ideas? I've looked for everything. It's a 2000 CC 3.9 by the way.

Thanks - Tim

If the IAC is dirty or bad it will just idle like crap. I'm not sure that this problem would be TB related.

as a matter of fact, the iac being dirty will cause this condition.lets not forget that IAC stands for idle air control.

I had that problem and it was the IAC valve on the TB just cleaned it and fixed the problem. Really frustrating when it happens in the middle of a busy parking lot.

IAC was the only thing I could think of as well, just seems really strange that's it's so intermittent and normally it idles fine. I'll try cleaning it good first - is carb. cleaner spray ok to use? If that doesn't work I'll replace it - anyone know the cost? I think I read here they run about $30.

Thanks!

carb cleaner is the only solvent you want to use. the IAC has what you would call a shaft (for lack of better terminalogy) inside it that also builds out with dirt. that shaft can bind in certain spots causing the condition to be intermittent.try using an old toothbrush and carb cleaner.

btw, motors got 42k miles on it. put the v8 tb on at about 37k. tb was nice and clean when installed, but I just pulled the iac and other parts right out of the old one and stuck them in the new without any cleaning.

I agree with mtlcafan79, mine had the same problem and I would not believe that it was the battery. I did all the other stuff, cleaning this, ajusting that. But it still happened every now and then.

Well it finally got to where it was happening almost every time I started it. I went to my mechanics shop and told him what it was doing. He was going to start checking all of this other stuff too, but I said to just test the battery first and see what it was like. He said it wouldn't be the battery but tested it anyway.

Wow! A mighty 180 cold cranking amps left in the big bad battery. Well he installed a new one and it fix the problem!

Dodge quit using EGR valves in trucks in 1995 so obviously he wouldnt have one to check in a 2000.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I'll have the battery tested first and then check out the IAC. I'll let you know what I find.

Check the crank sensor. If it is not picking up a signal you will not get any spark.
