Subject: How hard is it to roll back the Odometer IP: Logged
Message: My grandfathers truck is a 1995 dodge dakota I4, regular cab. The truck has 35,000 miles on it, orginal miles, he bought it new.
now, trying to sell it, someone made a comment that they thought we/I had rolled back the odom a few thousand miles.
now how hard is that to do? I have a carfax stating is all orginal.
also, the truck is in mint condition. it's green, standard, have all records or oil changes every 4 months and a tune-up, what should we/I except to get for this truck??

Message: If the interior is beat up and the rubber is worn off the pedals i would say the odo has been rolled back, but if the truck is mint no one should question it. The old vehicles with cable driven speedos were easy to disconnect or roll back. The newer digital ones are impossible to disconnect with out causing engine and tranny problems, and they can't be rolled back. You would have to order a new speedometer head programmed with lower miles, and thats pretty hard to do since they verify the milage on the old speedo before they will order you a new one. I don't know what the '95 has by my '96 is all electronic.

Message: I think whoever made the comment was trying to rip you off cuz they didn't wanna pay what you'd want. If you got a carfax statement verifying it, it definitely shouldn't be questioned. Not sure what you could get for it. Go to http://www.kbb.com and get the blue book price. That'll give ya a good estimate.

Message: I got news for ya'll about rolling back odometers. Back in the early 70's it was a big problem so to combat the problem, the manufacurers designed them so that if the odometer is rolled back a with line appears between the numbers,if it is rolled back less then 10 a line appears between the 1 and 10 collumn, 10 to 100 another line appears betweeen the 100 and 1000 column etc. so if you have an odo turned back say, 75,000 miles, all the digits that are used to turn it back that far will have a white line between them. Now with the computerized odo's out there unless you have a way to program the computer it is pretty much impossible.

Message: my understanding was that the modern cars monitured miles in multiple places such as psm, abs module and tranny. if these are far off then they will know the it has been tampered with.

Message: this is a quick way to do it if you are only worried about the warrenty. just remove the fuse that controls your odometer. it will still show up if you hook it up to a computer, but other wise no one can tell the difference. downfall you want know how fast your going or if you have gas of if your check engine light comes on. but if you have an over head display don't worry.

Message: Okay well to answer my own question.
when you register your car they ask you for miles for
1. to detrime the value of the car.
2. to keep track of the miles to prevent fraud.
so all of you rolling it back, beware!

Message: Well I have a 92 Dak which I believe are still pretty much the same as a 95. I was on assignment once at a location that, to get out of the area where I parked, I had to back up about 300 ft. I noticed that, in addition to my speedo going backward, the odometer would click off about a tenth. Why it didnt work on Ferris Beulers' dads' Ferrari is a mystery. Oh and I had my dash aprt the other day. Pulled the speedo out and noticed that, while I did not try it, it appeared all I had to do was take a small screwdriver and start rolling the thing backwards. It was completely exposed. And no I would not do it. I proud that my Dak has 240K miles and it still going.

Message: For curiosities sake, does the 92 and in that range (gen II) that isnt computerized throughout store the milage in different places like I know the genIII (newer) vehicles do?
